"I have great confidence in my intelligence people", he added, "but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today".

"In a key sentence in my remarks, I said "would" instead of 'wouldn't.' The sentence should have been, 'I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be Russia.' You can put that in", Trump instructed reporters at the White House.

"I came back and I said: 'What is going on?"

Larry Hogan, also a Republican, said in a tweet that, Trump, in defending Putin from US intelligence findings that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 presidential election, "failed to stand up for our country".

Still, Canadian officials were hard at work trying to get a better sense of what was said during the two-hour, closed-door meeting between Putin and Trump - and what ramifications, if any, the discussion would have for Canada.

He also complained that coverage of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit was inaccurate, insisting that he had not been "insulting" toward US allies.

Putin, for his part, said he and Trump have maintained regular contact through phone calls and meetings at global events but "the time has come to have a thorough discussion on various worldwide problems and sensitive issues".

But the United States president found precious little support for his decision not to confront the Russian leader - on either side of the political aisle. "I accept our intelligence community's conclucsion that Russia's meddling int eh 2016 election took place".

"Instead, he said, "[Putin] said it's not Russian Federation.

"I will say this: I don't see any reason why it would be, but I really do want to see the server".

US President Donald Trump has been forced to backtrack after a media storm following his seeming defence of Russian Federation over claims of meddling in his country's presidential elections in 2016.

He declined to offer specific criticism, but said: "I think we've all been foolish. I think we are all to blame".

Other politicians have suggested passing resolutions voicing support for intelligence agencies, or spending more to enhance election security and prevent cyber attacks.

Top administration officials have accepted this conclusion, such as former Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo who is now Mr Trump's secretary of state.

In the House, Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi planned a vote Tuesday in support of the intelligence committee's findings that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election.

The two countries are also deadlocked on Russia's role in Syria and Ukraine as well as the Iran nuclear deal, which Washington has torn apart despite continued support from the rest of the parties, including Russian Federation and the European Union.

Also, Trump no longer was speaking alongside Russia's President Vladimir Putin, but addressing reporters from the White House alongside Republican lawmakers. This week, Paul announced in an op-ed in Politico that he would soon be making a trip to Russian Federation to "discuss common ground with their leaders" - and would be consulting with the president before going.

"While we should seek to improve the situation in Syria and seek cooperation on other issues, we must also recognize the consensus that Russian Federation did try to interfere in our election", Poliquin said in a statement.

Mr Trump's former communications director Anthony Scaramucci told CNN the "optics are bad" and "he has to reverse course immediately".

Let's examine President Trump's statement, piece by piece.

The channel's report gave clear precedence to Putin, running lengthy excerpts of his comments, with fewer, shorter soundbites from Trump.

The Russian president has won praise at home, with one tabloid saying he had "outmanoeuvred" the U.S. president at the summit.
