  • Polar bear killed after attacking cruise ship employee in Norway

The attack happened when tourists landed on the most northern island of the Svalbard archipelago, between mainland Norway and the North Pole.

The second guard shot and killed the bear "in an act of self-defense", a spokesperson told the AP.

According to Danielsen, it is unknown who shot and killed the polar bear or if the injured person is a part of the tourist group or the crew on the ship.

As the cruise line explained via a statement on their Facebook page, "A polar bear guard - an expert employed by the cruise line - was attacked on land by a polar bear".

A photograph shows a polar bear lying lifeless on a beach; mouth slightly agape, a ring of blood on its neck. It is home to thousands of polar bears and is even known as "The Realm of the Polar Bear".

"He is out of danger, with no threat to life", the post reads. The guard suffered head injuries, however, he was responsive after the attack and was airlifted.

The incident occurred during a 10-day cruise on the MS Bremen, a ship that holds up to 155 passengers.

And despite the fact that the polar bear injured the guard, Twitter is furious that a threatened species was killed.

The Svalbard archipelago is a region between mainland Norway and the North Pole.

"Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has worked comprehensively and co-operatively with the Norwegian authorities to reconstruct and clarify the incident on the ground and will continue to do so", the company added.

The injured man was taken by helicopter to the town of Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen island.

Tourist expeditions are required to employ bear guards for the safety of the passengers. If the opportunity presents itself, polar bears will also consume carcasses, such as those of dead whales. In Arctic regions, their numbers have declined - a development linked to the loss of sea ice.

"Polar bears are only observed from aboard ships, from a safe distance", the company says. "Customers need to start asking themselves if they feel good about a native bear being shot dead to enable their selfish intrusion into this attractive creature's home", wrote one upset poster.
