An autopsy was conducted but the police watchdog, the special investigations unit, in charge of determining how the man was killed said they are not releasing the results.

Hussain was found dead running from police Sunday evening after his Danforth shooting spree, which left two people dead and 10 injured, some critically.

Police previously identified the other person killed in the shooting as 18-year-old Reese Fallon.

Monday afternoon, Canadian police identified the shooter as Faisal Hussain and refused to either confirm or rule out terrorism as a possible motive.

Toronto police spokeswoman Meaghan Gray said the victims of the mass shooting include eight women and girls, and seven men.

"Our son had severe mental health challenges, struggling with psychosis and depression his entire life", his family said in a statement Monday.

The statement put out by ISIS today said that 29-year-old Faisal Hussain "was a soldier of the Islamic State and carried out the attack in response to calls to target the citizens of the coalition countries".

They said medications and therapy had been unable to treat him.

"Our hearts are in pieces for the victims and for our city as we all come to grips with this awful tragedy", Hussain's parents said.

Toronto is grappling with a sharp rise in gun violence as gun deaths jump 53 percent to 26 so far this year from the same period last year.

"I've said for some time that the city has a gun problem, in that guns are far too readily available to far too many people", Toronto's mayor, Tory, said on Monday. Residents of the neighbourhood said Hussain's family has suffered other tragedies in recent years, including the death of Hussain's sister from a vehicle crash.

Although mass shootings are rare in Canada's largest city, police recently have deployed dozens of additional officers to deal with a spike in gun violence in the city.

"I promise all of the people of Toronto, but most importantly those directly affected by this tragedy, that we will all be relentless in getting answers about why this senseless attack happened", Tory said.

The 13 wounded ranged in age from 10 to 59, and suffered injuries ranging from serious to minor, Saunders said. It is a huge loss, " said Canadian Member of Parliament Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who knew Fallon.

Fourteen people, including a young girl, were shot in the incident near downtown Toronto, police in Canada's biggest city said. But it's not yet known whether the gun was legally obtained.

"I'm out of my mind just thinking about it".

Fourteen people plus the shooter were struck in what police described as an "exchange of gunfire".

As investigators dug through Hussain's life, the attack has prompted debate over whether Toronto - which has consistently ranked as one of the most secure major cities in North America - was becoming less safe.

"We'll obviously examine carefully what they've had to say".

In April, a driver deliberately plowed his white Ryder rental van into a lunch-hour crowd, killing 10 people and injuring 15 along a roughly 1.6-km stretch of sidewalk thronged with pedestrians.
