The US president also said North Korea's nuclear threat had been a major topic during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week.

"Discussions are ongoing, and they're going very, very well", he said. The president echoed his own statement to reporters from a day before, when he said that "we have no time limit [on denuclearization]. We have no speed limit". However, Pyongyang shouldn't look forward to an easing of sanctions any time soon, as, according to Trump, they will remain in place. There have been no tests. "Russia has agreed to help with North Korea, where relationships with us are very good and the process is moving along", he said.

President Trump did not specify what sort of help he expects from Moscow, but his expectations might be based more on a clear understanding of Russian objectives than Trump's personal contact with Putin.

"So many people at the higher ends of intelligence loved my press conference performance in Helsinki", Trump said in a series of early-morning tweets about their Monday summit. Mike Pompeo will be discussing this with the North Koreans in the near future, about how to dismantle all of their [weapons of mass destruction] and ballistic missile programmes in a year.

The president's latest comments on the timeline for denuclearisation appear to shift from his position ahead of the summit with Mr Kim, when he said denuclearisation should start "without delay".

Speaking at a press conference in the United Kingdom last week, the USA president said negotiations with Pyongyang would be "probably a longer process than anybody would like".

According to the DPAA, about 7,700 US troops are still listed as missing from the Korean War; about 5,300 of that total are believed to have fallen in North Korea.

It was the first time in nine years that US and North Korean generals held talks.

But since the summit, Trump and his top aides have been preaching patience when it comes to working with Kim.
