President Donald Trump listens during a meeting with European Commission leader Jean-Claude Juncker in the Oval Office of the White House, today in Washington.

A Reuters reporter had asked Putin, "Did you want President Trump to win the election and did you direct any of your officials to help him do that?"

President Vladimir Putin gifted a soccer ball to US President Donald Trump during a joint press conference and summit in Helsinki.

Meanwhile, the president has said he wants his second meeting with Mr Putin to take place next year after the federal Russian Federation probe is over, according to his national security adviser John Bolton.

Right after President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had their news conference in Helsinki, a writer for The Atlantic magazine highlighted a curious omission in the White House transcript.

"The president. will be their toughest enemy, most hard enemy", he said.

In his testimony, Pompeo faced often-contentious questioning from senators demanding information about what Trump discussed with Putin while they were alone for almost two hours with only translators present.

In the interview, Pompeo acknowledged that he was not in the room when Trump and Putin met for almost two hours in Helsinki.

Russian Federation scoffed at a United States declaration that said Washington would not accept Moscow's annexation of Crimea, suggesting the country's Ukraine policy could change in the future.

Trump weathered fierce criticism after his summit last week with Putin in Helsinki after he appeared to give credence to the Russian leader's assertion that Moscow did not interfere in the 2016 us presidential election. It's even possible they fear that Trump will try to make up for his toadying behavior at the first event by going all Barbarossa on their leader and ruining their budding alliance with the U.S.

The "Crimea Declaration" appeared to try to quell suggestions that Washington could accept Moscow's 2014 occupation of the Ukrainian peninsula following the Trump-Putin meeting and questions about what Trump agreed to in the one-on-one talks.

In a statement released before the hearing, the State Department said the United States will never recognize Russia's annexation of Crimea and will continue to insist that Ukraine's territorial integrity be restored.

In a "Crimea Declaration" issued shortly before his testimony to a Senate committee, Pompeo restated US policy rejecting the annexation.

Congress has struggled with a response to the Russian interference. "It will be highly contested - that is, the modalities, the means, the timing of this will be things that I'm confident we'll be discussing for a period of time", he said.

The relations between Washington and Moscow have been strained over Ukraine, Syria, Iran, the poison attack of an ex-Russian spy in Britain, and Russia's alleged meddling in US 2016 elections. Those indictments stemmed from Mueller's investigation, which is also looking into whether Trump's campaign cooperated with the Russian effort.

But Mr Corker made it clear his panel will also grill Mr Pompeo about his recent trip to Pyongyang, Mr Trump's "undermining" of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the defence alliance's principle of mutual defence, as well as the President's controversial trade tariffs which appear to be mushrooming into a trade war.
