  • Elections agency says Imran Khan won Pakistan's election, but needs a coalition

Reiterating his vision of peace in the region, Narendra Modi expressed hopes of democracy in the country.

Imran Khan will be sworn in as Pakistan's new Prime Minister before the country's independence day on August 14, his party has announced as it is trying to reach out to smaller parties and independents to form the next government. He has begun coalition talks to form the government after his party won 116 of 269 contested seats in the National Assembly.

European Union observers say there was uneven playing field during the election as major obstacles were put in the way of a rival party that was led by jailed former premier Nawaz Sharif.

Pakistan held general elections on Wednesday to elect the members of the National Assembly, the lower house of the country's parliament, and members of four provincial assemblies.

"We all look forward to having an honest leader and we hope that Imran Khan will be that honest leader", said Dr Nighat.

Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI), or Pakistan Movement for Justice, has taken the decisive lead by winning 115 seats against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and former President Asif Zardari's Pakistan Peoples Party which won 64 and 43 seats, respectively. "A decision about it will be taken by the party in consultation with the foreign ministry in coming days", he said.

The PTI has emerged as the single largest party in National Assembly after the July 25 elections, but it's still short of numbers to form the government.

Spokesperson for Khan's party Fawad Chaudhry also did not rule out inviting Modi to the swearing-in ceremony. A new government will be formed in Pakistan and there will be a new prime minister, who has extended a hand of friendship towards India. Thanking Modi for his wishes, Imran Khan said that the disputes between the two nations must be settled with dialogue.

He also said that "war and bloodshed instead of resolving conflicts give birth to tragedies".

Khan, during a speech declaring victory on Thursday before official results, offered to investigate opposition allegations of vote-rigging and said he wanted to "unite" the country under his leadership.

Majority-Muslim Pakistan has criticized India in recent years about what it calls New Delhi's heavy-handed tactics in Kashmir, as well as violence suffered by the Muslim-minority groups in India at the hands of Hindu extremists.

He was a fierce critic of the United States war on terror, particularly the country's use of drone strikes in Pakistan, which targeted terrorist networks but also killed Pakistani civilians.
