Riders hit by tear gas on Tour de France

Less than 30 kilometers into the stage, a protest by French farmers brought to the riders to a halt after bales of hay were thrown onto the road.

Several riders, including Thomas and Froome, needed treatment after being affected by a spray used by police to break up a farmers' protest early in the stage.

Tour leader Geraint Thomas and four-time champion Chris Froome were among those impacted by the gas, respectively seen pouring water into his eyes and applying eye drops to counter the chemical.

Froome, who had been aiming for a fourth consecutive Grand Tour victory after triumphing at the Vuelta a Espana last year and this year's Giro d'Italia, is now in a battle for a podium place.

Froome sits second in the general classification, 60.39 seconds behind Sky teammate Thomas.

As the Tour reached the mountains of the Pyrenees, Philippe Gilbert and Alaphilippe led on the ascent to Col de Portet-d'Aspet.

"The last few days I felt really good, which is a good sign", said Martin.

The Quick-Step Floors rider, who already prevailed in the 10th stage in Le Grand Bornand, whizzed past Adam Yates six kilometres from the line after the Briton had hit the deck in a left-hand curve in the final descent. I'm sad for Yates who crashed but it could have happened to me. They must be respected, they take enough risks for their job.

The small group of farmers from the Ariege department were protesting the reduction of European Union funding, French media reported.

Kangert was reeled in by King of the Mountain leader Julian Alaphilippe in the first climb of the day to Montée de Peyragudes, but held on to reach the top ahead of the Frenchman.

"We are not going to lock the riders in a stadium or a tennis court", Tour director Christian Prudhomme said.

"First of all, I want to say that I'm happy to be here after that tough moment", Gilbert said.

Spanish rider Gorka Izaguirre finished second, 15 seconds behind, and Yates crossed third with the same time.

"When you come so close to winning a stage of the Tour it's pretty devastating."
