  • Israel evacuates 800 Syria White Helmets to Jordan: Army

Israel rebuffed on Monday a new Russian offer to keep Iranian forces in Syria away from the Golan Heights ceasefire line, an Israeli official said, complicating Moscow's bid to stabilise the country amid a waning civil war.

"Following the reports of sirens sounding in northern Israel, it was concluded that the rockets were from internal fighting in Syria where they later fell".

"In response to the threat, the IDF launched 2 David's Sling aerial defense system interceptors", the IDF said. "No damage was caused and there were no injuries".

Israel has vowed it will retain a free hand to hit hard areas along its border and elsewhere in Syria where it suspects Iranian-backed forces are stationed. Israel and Iran have threatened to destroy each other, and the proliferation of Iran-backed Shiite militias in Syria has compelled Israel to respond with increasingly deadly force.

Russia, a key Assad ally, has warned it would be unrealistic to expect Iran to fully withdraw from the country. The two have attempted to reach an understanding as to how the Syrian military could complete its retaking of the south from insurgents without sparking a wider conflict with Israel, which remains technically at war with Syria.

An explosion is seen at Quneitra at the Syrian side of the Israeli Syrian border as it is seen from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, Israel.

The group has received support from the US and other Western nations.

The latest disagreement arose in a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a senior Russian delegation dispatched to Jerusalem as Syrian government forces routed rebels near the Golan.

Piazza said there is no evidence to support Syrian claims that the White Helmets organization has aided armed combatants or are a conduit for Islamic extremists.

The Syrian Government has condemned the evacuation of hundreds of Syrian White Helmet rescue workers and their families with the help of Israeli soldiers, calling it a "criminal operation" undertaken by "Israel and its tools".

The White Helmets' evacuation proves that where the will exists, a collective commitment by countries to protect Syrian civilians makes an immediate and tangible difference.

In Monday's meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Mr Netanyahu turned down a Russian offer to keep Iranian forces 100 kilometres from the border, according to an Israeli official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"Words are not enough to express the discontent which the Syrians feel towards these mean conspiracies and the limitless support provided by the Western states, Israel and Jordan to the White Helmets. and other terrorist organizations", the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Syrian government has accused the White Helmets, also known as Syria Civil Defence, of being a Western-sponsored terrorist organisation.

"Several days ago President Trump contacted me, as did Canadian Prime Minister [Justin] Trudeau, and others, and requested that we assist in evacuating hundreds of "white helmets" from Syria". The department thanked Israel, Jordan, the EU, Canada and Germany.

The evacuation is significant not only because it provided much needed protection for the White Helmets, but because it happened despite Jordan and Israel's insistence on not allowing Syrian asylum seekers fleeing violence in Daraa and Quneitra to seek protection in territories under their control.
