Samsung’s texting app apparently sent pictures to people’s contacts without permission

  • Someone looking at their smartphone shocked

Some believe the problem stems from the conversion from the SMS messaging protocol to the new RCS (Rich Communication Services) on the native Samsung texting app. Samsung has acknowledged the problem and is working on it, but has not pointed to a cause. This means that some people who have been impacted by this bug won't really know what has happened until they're informed by the recipient. Some users on the Reddit thread have pointed out turning off Storage access for the Samsung Messages app on their phones will give a temporary fix to the problem. Their owners say that Samsung Messages, the default texting app for Galaxy devices, pushed photos and scheduled texts to random contacts, but left no record of the messages being sent.

"Oddly enough, my wife's phone did that last night, and mine did it the night before", said Reddit user Sfkn123. "However, there was record of it on mobile logs", one Redditor posted less than a week ago.

Samsung is now urging concerned customers to call its support lines directly. One user said that his Galaxy smartphone sent ALL of his photos to his girlfriend. ".When her phone texted me her gallery, it didn't show up on her end - and vice versa". It appears that Galaxy S9, S9+, and Note 8 devices are all affected by this bug.

Over on Samsung's forum, a Galaxy S9 user this week complained that Samsung Messages "has become VERY BUGGY" since T-Mobile started rolling out RCS support. A Samsung representative told The Verge that the company is "aware of the reports" and is "looking into it". He also said the app was displaying some messages as sent, when the other party had not got them. The working theory is that this error is something to do with the RCS profile updates that have been rolling out on U.S. carriers.

'We are not aware of any customers in Australia that have experienced this issue'.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Samsung for further comment.
