President Donald Trump's nominee to be the next Supreme Court justice snagged a key Republican senator's support on Monday: Kentucky's Rand Paul.

Senate Democrats, infuriated with Republicans for requesting only a portion of Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh's records from his tenure in the George W. Bush White House, are sending a wide-ranging request demanding that his entire paper trail be provided to Congress.

"I am very concerned about his position on privacy and the Fourth Amendment", Paul told Politico's Burgess Everett in an interview.

"Over the last two weeks, West Virginians have contacted me more than 8,000 times with their opinions on Judge Kavanaugh and the questions they have for him, and when I met with him today, I asked him several of their questions", Mr. Manchin said in a statement after the meeting.

My conversation with Judge Kavanaugh reinforces my belief that he will evaluate cases before the Supreme Court from a textual and originalist point of view.

After Manchin said he would talk with Kavanaugh, another red-state Democrat, Sen.

Kavanaugh is meeting on Monday with Democratic Sen.

With Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., absent due to his health, Republicans need every member of the slim 51-49 majority to confirm Kavanaugh.

In May, Paul did vote against Gina Haspel, Trump's pick to succeed Pompeo at the CIA, over her role in the agency's historic use of torture.

"Hopefully most of the appropriation bills will be passed, a little better prioritization of spending, so I certainly don't like playing shut down politics", said Sen.

EDITOR'S NOTE _ One in a series of stories examining the nomination of federal appeals court Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Manchin, who is facing a push in West Virginia to support confirmation, did not come out with a position on confirmation after the meeting, instead describing it as "productive".

But Paul probably doesn't want to become the object of insanely intense pressure from both sides of the Kavanaugh battle, and particularly from conservatives who view this nomination as a crucial step in the reversal of liberal judicial precedents on issues ranging from economic regulation to voting rights to the big one: abortion.

He said that many of those documents are irrelevant to Kavanaugh's legal history, and that the nominee would not be able to adequately comment on them.

The public is also split on the preferred timing for Kavanaugh's confirmation hearings, with 33 percent saying the Senate should consider him this fall, and 31 percent preferring that they wait until after the midterm elections on November 6.
