Still No Clarity From White House on North Korea Plan

North Korea intends to maintain some of its nuclear stockpile and production facilities while potentially concealing them from the United States, The Washington Post reported Saturday, citing U.S. officials.

According to the deal signed by President Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong-un on June 12, the North is supposed to "work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

Joel Wit, a former diplomat who helped the USA negotiate with North Korea including a nuclear agreement between the US and the regime in 1994, said the USA believed the rogue regime had two sites to "enrich nuclear fuel" including Yongbyon and another, but the name of the center was not revealed.

"If they have the strategic decision already made to do that, and they're cooperative, we can move very quickly", he added. "We can get, physically, we would be able to dismantle the overwhelming bulk of their programs within a year".

He said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will likely discuss that proposal with the North Koreans soon.

Pompeo has already visited Pyongyang twice since April to meet with Kim - the first time when he was still director of the Central Intelligence Agency - and there are discussions about a possible third trip to North Korea late next week but such a visit has not yet been confirmed.

Bolton dismissed a question about whether Trump has been more willing to criticise U.S. allies than authoritarian leaders of rival nations, including Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong-un.

"We're very well aware of North Korea's patterns of behavior over decades of negotiating with the United States", Bolton said".

"Work is ongoing to deceive us on the number of facilities, the number of weapons, the number of missiles", the official said. "There's not any starry-eyed feeling among the group doing this". But North Korean officials are suggesting that they declare far fewer.

South Korea media reported on Sunday that USA envoy Sung Kim, the American ambassador to the Philippines, met with North Korean officials at the border on Sunday to coordinate an agenda for Pompeo's next visit to North Korea.

Trump had showered Kim with praises, calling him a "very talented man", and made security concessions in return for very little.

Immediately following the summit, Trump was quick to claim there was "no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea". Last summer, during his first one-on-one meeting with Putin, in Hamburg, Trump said that he questioned him about the interference accusations and that the Russian leader denied it.

"There was a delay, but I think he has now got the agreement to go", former US National Security Council director of Asian affairs Victor Cha told the Guardian. And by the way I really believe North Korea has a tremendous future.

North Korea's past behavior offered a cautionary tale for the Trump administration ahead of the Singapore summit, with Pyongyang having reneged on earlier airy promises regarding denuclearization.
