Texas Rangers trade Cole Hamels to Chicago Cubs

  • Reports: Rangers Trading Cole Hamels To Cubs

Those numbers have been hurt by a awful July for Hamels, who is 1-3 with a 11.12 ERA in four starts after carrying a 3.61 ERA into the month.

The Cubs haven't had the best of luck with high-profile free-agent signing Yu Darvish this offseason, but they could get a steal in his former teammate, Hamels, should they fix the kink in his form.

Hamels, who had been scheduled to start for Texas on Saturday in Houston, will instead travel then to join the Cubs for the rest of their series in St. Louis. The Cubs have about $14MM of breathing room beneath the $197MM luxury tax threshold, so taking on roughly $4MM of Hamels' remaining salary would allow them to supplement their rotation while leaving some room for additional acquisitions between now and the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

But the 34-year-old Hamels is an experienced playoff pitcher with a history of success at Wrigley Field.

"He has been pretty good", Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Thursday after the team's interest has first been reported.

Butler, 27, had a 4.08 ERA in eight relief appearances this season. "He's a great competitor". The San Diego native struck out 13 while pitching a no-hitter at Chicago's iconic ballpark in his final start with the Phillies in 2015. "He competes, and he knows what he's doing".

The Chicago Cubs are gambling a change of scenery and a pennant race will help Cole Hamels return to form.

Hamels is earning $22.5MM in 2018 and is still owed about $7.98MM of that sum through season's end, plus at least a $6MM buyout on his $20MM option for the 2019 season. In other words: Hamels can't be worse than Tyler Chatwood, right?

The Cubs are 60-42 this season, sitting in first place of the NL Central. Replacing Chatwood in the rotation is a big help.

The Cubs apparently had seen enough.
