  • Cohen Says Trump Knew About Trump Tower Meeting With Russians In Advance, CNN Reports

Michael Cohen, who was until recently Donald Trump's personal lawyer, said last night the USA president personally approved a meeting at Trump Tower in which Russians were expected to deliver dirt on Hillary Clinton.

Cohen claims Trump approved of the meeting moving forward, the news organizations reported, and is willing to tell Special Counsel Robert Mueller his version of the events.

The meeting occurred at Trump Tower in June 2016 with Donald Trump Jr., son-in-law Jared Kushner and then-campaign manager Paul Manafort.

News also reported that Cohen was willing to speak to Meuller about his claims, citing its own "knowledgeable source" on Thursday night.

Music producer Rob Goldstone arranged the meeting, and told Trump an email that a "Russian government lawyer" was offering information that "would incriminate Hillary [Clinton] and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father".

Mr Cohen has hired Lanny Davis, a lawyer renowned for his close ties to the Clintons, and the leaks have come to light through CNN, the cable news channel that Mr Trump most dislikes.

Giuliani added in his Thursday interview that he didn't "see how he [Cohen] has any credibility", referring to Cohen's lawyer's releasing a tape earlier this week of what appeared to be a secretly recorded conversation between Cohen and Trump. He even retained Bill and Crooked Hillary's lawyer.

Noting that Cohen himself is under federal investigation, Trump tweeted at one point: "Sounds to me like someone is trying to make up stories in order to get himself out of an unrelated jam (Taxi cabs maybe?)".

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said he thought the chance was "zero" that Trump Jr. did not take his Russian guests up to meet his father after the meeting. Asked about the reversal on "Fox News Sunday", Giuliani said if he had known about Cohen's recordings, he would have called him a "scoundrel" instead of praising him.

Goldstone said the information was "part of Russian Federation and its government's support for Mr. Trump".

In a tweet yesterday, the U.S. president accused Michael Cohen, his one-time fixer who is now under federal investigation, of deciding to "make up stories" to get himself out of trouble.

The Thursday reports of Cohen's claims is further evidence that Cohen could flip on Trump in the Russian Federation investigation - which would be a nightmare for Trump's legal team.

Trump's current lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, refuted the claim on Chris Cuomo's show. The Times also reported in June that Trump personally dictated a misleading statement about the goal of the meeting, even after his aides repeatedly denied that he did so. "We are very confident of the accuracy and reliability of the information that has been provided by Mr Trump Jr, and on his behalf". They also note that two days before the meeting, Trump mysteriously announced plans to give a "major speech" about Clinton's scandals.

To be clear, that case has not been proven and Trump and everyone else in the Trump camp denies it.

The man who may hold some of Donald Trump's deepest secrets is up for investigation, in news that will no doubt make the USA leader shiver.

Friday's tweet storm from the President included another denunciation of Mueller's investigation as "the rigged Witch Hunt".
