  • GETTYMrs May was handed letters of resignation by her Brexit Secretary and Foreign Secretary

DONALD Trump today heaped praise on Theresa May but urged her to make sure her Brexit deal lets Britain strike a trade agreement with the United States - saying, "That's all that matters".

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday, the second day of his London trip, visits the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, then Chequers - the 16th century manor house of the current prime minister - followed by Windsor Castle.

Last night Mr Trump touched down in Scotland en route to his golf course at Turnberry for the private leg of his visit.

But as the pomp and ceremony unfolded at Blenheim Palace, the historic birth place of former British prime minister Winston Churchill, an interview Trump had given British tabloid The Sun was published.

The US leader has recently threatened to hit imports of European cars with a 20-percent tariff if Brussels doesn't remove levies and other trade barriers on US goods. For May, it comes at a time when she is already politically weakened following a string of resignations from her Cabinet. "I think he has done a bad job on crime, if you look, all of the terrible things going on there, with all of the crime that is being brought in".

In another blow to May, Trump said her now ex-foreign secretary "would be a great prime minister. If they do that, then their trade deal with the United States will probably not be made", he said. As he said in his interview with The Sun she "is a very good person" and he 'never said anything bad about her.'.

During the gala, a wide-ranging interview Trump gave to Britain's The Sun newspaper was posted on its website.

"I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn't agree, she didn't listen to me", Trump said. "Standing beside her today, he told a very different story". "If they don't make the right deal she might very well do what I suggested that she might want to do".

But alongside his characteristically outspoken opinion, President Trump has also blurted out a number of definite falsehoods.

"You can't walk away but you can do other things".

Trump has insisted the US-UK relationship is "the highest level of special".

When asked about Trump's comments, May's spokesman said she was looking forward to sitting down with Trump to talk him through the negotiating stance. He was stationed to meet with Prime Minister Theresa May and Queen Elizabeth II along with the rest of the British royal family.

After calling Trump's attack on him "preposterous", London Mayor Sadiq Khan-who initially rejected organizers' efforts to fly the Trump Baby blimp-explained why he ultimately made a decision to allow the balloon to fly over London.

Speaking to the Sun, Mr Trump attacked Mr Khan over the wave of terrorist attacks in London previous year and accused him of doing "a awful job".

Trump blamed the city's woes on immigration, and said it was a "shame" Europe was letting in so many migrants. "I have just been hearing this over the last three days". "It's a very negative thing for Europe".

"It's not that we think that's a likely scenario. but we think it's prudent that every member state should plan for the worst", he told local media RTE while attending a meeting on rural development issues in the country's western county of Mayo.

"The president likes and respects Prime Minister May very much".
