  • War with Iran is the mother of all wars, Rouhani tells Trump

The protester continued to shout, but she was drowned out by audience members shouting her down, and chants of "USA!"

He said despite poor treatment by their leaders, "the proud Iranian people are not staying silent about their government's many abuses", Pompeo said.

Iran faces increased USA pressure and looming sanctions after Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from a 2015 worldwide deal over Iran's nuclear program. The Trump administration in late June threatened sanctions on countries that purchase oil from Iran.

Roundly applauded by his audience, Pompeo affirmed support by Washington for protesters who have taken to the streets of Iran as economic woes mount after the United States withdrawal from the nuclear accord.

Iran has denied the allegations and said its nuclear program is strictly for civilian purposes.

The top USA diplomat claimed that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had an off-the-books hedge fund, Setad, worth $95bn, and that Iran's judiciary chief Sadeq Larijani was worth $300m after wiring public funds to his own accounts.

In his speech, Pompeo vowed to keep up the financial pressure on Tehran, specifically targeting the banking and energy sectors. The U.S.is "undertaking a diplomatic and financial pressure campaign to cut off the funds that the regime uses to enrich itself and support death and destruction", Pompeo said.

The comment - similar in tone and wording he used past year in warning North Korea about its rapidly improving nuclear weapons program - came hours after Rouhani said the USA risked the "mother of all wars" in a conflict with Iran.

Gen. Gholam Hossein Gheibparvar, the chief of the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard's volunteer Basij force, claimed Trump "won't dare" take any military action against Iran.

Some analysts said the administration's stance is putting the United States on the road to a direct confrontation with the Islamic Republic, which it has not had relations with since the 1979 revolution.

"The United States hears you".

Pompeo said anger against "widespread" corruption helped encourage the protests.

"The regime in Iran has been a nightmare for the Iranian people", he said.

Iran's oil exports could fall by as much as two-thirds by the end of the year because of new U.S. sanctions, putting oil markets under huge strain amid supply outages elsewhere.

Pompeo said the action showed that USA authorities "were not afraid to tackle the regime at its highest level".

The heightened rhetoric follows the Trump administration's launch of an offensive of speeches and online communications meant to foment unrest and pressure Iran to end its nuclear program and its support of militant groups, according to us officials.

Rouhani is yet to respond to Trump's most recent threat.

He called them "merely polished front men for the ayatollahs' worldwide con artistry". "Their nuclear deal didn't make them moderates, it made them wolves in sheep's clothing".
