Trump told me to 'sue the EU' over Brexit: Theresa May

  • US President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May meet Friday at Chequers near Aylesbury Britain

"Interestingly what the president also said at that press conference was 'don't walk away, '" May said.

While Trump did meet with the Queen on Saturday, his visit has done little to fix his negative image in the U.K. At the same time as he was dining with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday night, an interview the president had conducted with The Sun was released in which he criticized May's "soft Brexit" deal and said it could "kill" any prospect of a trade deal with the United States.

Trump also claimed that the White House press team would release the tape proving he did not criticize May, but when Yahoo News contacted the press shop for a copy of the tape, they did not release it.

It prompted Mr Trump to say it made him "feel unwelcome" in the city, on his second day of a four-day United Kingdom visit.

He said that May's new, softer approach to Brexit - which would leave Britain sticking to a "common rulebook" with Brussels on goods - would kill off the chances of a much sought-after U.S. -U.K. trade deal.

"Whatever you do is OK with us, just make sure we can trade together, that's all that matters".

Trump said he had told British Prime Minister Theresa May that London must get a "carve out" in whatever arrangement is struck with Brussels, so that a "great trade deal" could be struck.

"This incredible woman right here is doing a fantastic job", he said.

"She said it's a very - and she's right - it's a very complex problem, I think nobody had any idea how complex that was going to be", he said according to an interview published by the Mail on Sunday.

In retrospect, British Prime Minister Theresa May might wonder whether this was really the best week for a visit from Donald Trump.

The organisers of the protest had been refused permission to fly it at Holyrood or at the President's gold resort in Turnberry, despite having been given permission to fly it in London's Parliament Square.

Before heading for Scotland, the president and Queen Elizabeth II became acquainted over tea at Windsor Castle.

He later flew to Scotland where he will stay at his Trump Turnberry golf course until Sunday when he heads to Helsinki for talks with Putin, with whom Trump said he would bring up the issue of nuclear disarmament.
