What glitches? Amazon's latest Prime Day made 'history'

  • Amazon Prime Day 2018: Best deals so far including TVs, Fitbit and Echo Show

If you spend more than $10 at Whole Foods you will get a $10 Amazon gift card to use online during Prime Day.

Amazon said earlier Tuesday in an email to CNBC that "Prime Day sales in the United States so far are bigger than ever - in fact, in the first ten hours Prime Day grew even faster, year-over-year, than the first ten hours last year". As it relates to item sales, however, a 5 percent chunk is not insignificant considering the many different categories on Amazon.

People who want in on the exclusive deals are able to sign up for a 30-day free trial as an Amazon Prime member.

MORE COUNTRIES: Amazon has been expanding its Prime membership around the world, and four new countries will be part of Prime Day this year: Australia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Singapore.

The company did not provide total sales figures for the event, which was open only to members of its Prime subscription service across 17 countries, up from 13 past year.

Two companies acquired by Amazon also saw big Prime Day sales: Ring, the video doorbell maker, had its biggest day ever on Amazon on Monday, as its Video Doorbell Pro sold out; and savings by Prime Members at Whole Foods Market reached into the millions of dollars, the company said. It had more sign-ups during 2017's event than any other day in the company's history, Amazon said at the time, without providing specific numbers.

Twitter lit up with screen shots of Amazon's Prime Day failures, which featured photos of dogs and the words "sorry".

This year Amazon's desktop and mobile websites both experienced major glitches on Monday, making it hard for customers to make purchases and sparking a social media storm in response. Target reported Wednesday that it had its largest online shopping day of the year on Tuesday.

While Prime Day was undoubtedly a success this year, the rocky start certainly left a sour taste in some customer's mouths.

Prime Day is now over, but if you're itching for a deal, Newegg's competing FantasTECH sales event is still going on. As a result of Amazon's holiday increasing in popularity, numerous retailers offered deals on their own sites to combat Amazon, turning mid-July into a mini holiday shopping season.

Workers in Amazon's Germany, Poland, and Spain-based warehouses have gone on strike during Prime Day, and the timing is far from coincidental. It says customers bought more pencils, pens, notebooks, glue sticks, lunch boxes and backpacks on Prime Day last year than any other day of the year.

When online, the links on the main page advertising the Prime Day deals instead went nowhere - except to the main page itself.
