When he appeared to claim that Russian Federation was no longer a threat to US, Donald Trump was actually saying that he would not field the question asked, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders insists.

Critics have accused Trump of siding with Russian Federation over his own country by failing to criticise Moscow for what USA intelligence agencies previous year described as Russia's election interference in an attempt to sow discord, aid Trump's candidacy and disparage Trump's Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton. Though Watson Coleman used the #TreasonSummit hashtag, she has chosen not to say the word in public yet, her spokeswoman said.

"This funding is critical to the administration's top priority, securing the nation's borders", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement. Protesters gathered in front of the White House on Tuesday chanted, "Traitor!"

Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky, mentioned that bill when speaking with reporters on Tuesday.

The scale of the bipartisan outcry at Trump's stance toward Putin has only been rivaled by his 2017 waffling over condemning white supremacist demonstrators in Charlottesville, Virginia.

By day's end, in an interview with CBS News, Trump was ready to set an unmistakably forceful tone. "We're not going to have it, and that's the way it's going to be". Sanders said Trump believes the threat from Russian Federation to undermine those elections still exists.

Trump said that he considered Russian President Vladimir Putin to be personally accountable for Moscow's meddling in the 2016 USA elections.

"Republicans in Congress need to stand firm that we absolutely will not tolerate the President even considering turning over a USA ambassador".

"Mr. President, it is time to stop taking the word of a KGB agent over that of your own intelligence officials, " Senate minority leader Charles Schumer of NY said in a statement. "I don't see any reason why it would be", Trump said.

Previously when asked by reporters before a Cabinet meeting whether Moscow was still targeting the U.S., Trump shook his head and said, "No".

Trump's statement received immediate backlash because it directly contradicted comments made by his director of national intelligence, Dan Coats, who said, "We have been clear in our assessment of Russian meddling in our 2016 elections and their ongoing, pervasive efforts to undermine our democracy".

"The president is wrong", Sen.

Asked why Americans should defend North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member Montenegro from attack, Trump said, "I've asked the same question".

During her briefing just hours after the incident Sanders strove to clarify the typically confusing sequence.

Trump has refined and sharpened his presentation in the two days since Helsinki.

At the news conference with Putin, he was asked if he would denounce what happened in 2016 and warn Putin never to do it again, and he did not directly answer.

Sanders explanation of Trump's "No" was the second time since Monday's summit that Trump and the White House have blamed a misstatement or misunderstanding for the furore over Russian Federation.

Both Trump and the Kentucky Republican are inclined to dispense with the traditional USA role as the world's top cop.

Swalwell blasted President Donald Trump's reaction to the offer.

The past week has been a rough one for the trans-Atlantic alliance with signs that US President Donald Trump is weakening long-standing western relationships and potentially accelerating a process which would see US global influence decline.

"Some people HATE the fact that I got along well with President Putin of Russian Federation".

"He understands it, and he's not happy about it", Trump said.

In an interview with CBS News on Wednesday, Trump re-emphasized his belief that Russians meddled in the election.
