  • Zimbabwe's youth hope election outcome will end biting unemployment

Chigumba urged political parties to desist from announcing unofficial results.

"Overall (there was) a huge amount of voting - especially young people, mostly in a very good atmosphere, generally peaceful, which is positive", he added.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has said it found no "cheating" in the election, the first since former leader Robert Mugabe stepped down in November under military pressure.

The commission said it would delay releasing any results of the presidential race until all the votes are collated.

Zimbabwe appeared to be heading for a contested result in the historic election, raising the likelihood of a bitter battle over allegations of fraud and malpractice from both sides.

The opposition says results it has collected from around the country show "beyond a reasonable doubt" that Nelson Chamisa has won the presidential election.

The voting started Monday, with long lines forming at polling stations across Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission put voter turnout as high as 75% in some areas.

"While investors remain sceptical over whether Mugabe's former right-hand man has indeed turned over a new leaf, Mnangagwa's charm offensive with Western governments and businesses has at least given him a credible lifeline at the poll", said Verisk Maplecrodt analyst Charles Laurie in a note.

"We will not steal their choice of leaders, we will not subvert their will", Chigumba said.

During Mugabe's rule, national elections were overshadowed by repeated voting procedure violations and the suppression of the opposition.

The ZEC boss once again applauded the high vote turnout in the country's first post-Robert Mugabe elections.

A voter in Harare, the capital, said Zimbabwe is anxious to hear the election results as soon as possible.

The two main contenders are President Emmerson Mnangagwa, a former deputy president, and Nelson Chamisa, a lawyer and pastor who leads a coalition of opposition groups.

Nearly 5.7 million registered to vote in the election that had 23 candidates vying for the presidency and 130 political parties running for Parliament and council.
