  • One dead, several wounded after Saudi Arabia 'intercepts Yemen missile'

Dozens of Yemeni schoolchildren are dead Thursday after an air strike by the USA -backed, Saudi-led coalition hit a school bus that was carrying them through a crowded market.

In a tweet, the International Committee for the Red Cross said the attack targeted a bus carrying children in Dahyan market in Saada province, which borders Saudi Arabia.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said a hospital it supported in Saada had received dozens of casualties after the attack.

"The Secretary-General calls on all parties to respect their obligations under global humanitarian law, in particular the fundamental rules of distinction, proportionality and precautions in attack", his spokesperson, Farhan Haq, said Thursday.

A Yemeni child is transported to a hospital after being wounded in a reported airstrike on the Iran-backed Huthi rebels' stronghold province of Saada, on Thu., Aug. 9, 2018.

US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the United States did not have the "full details of what happened on the ground" but said "we're concerned about these reports".

There was no immediate comment from the coalition, which is led by Saudi Arabia and which is fighting to restore Yemen's internationally recognized government to power.

Colonel Turki al-Malki, a spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, said the missile strike was aimed at a "legitimate target".

The ballistic missile was sacked from the northern Yemeni province of Amran towards the southern Saudi city of Jizan, said a coalition statement published by the official Saudi Press Agency.

ICRC said one of the hospitals it supports was treating the wounded.

UNICEF said in a statement that "many children were reportedly killed and injured" in the attack and that all of the children were reportedly under the age of 15.

He accused the rebels of using children as "tools and covers for their terrorist acts".

Both the United Nations chief and the US State Department called for investigations into the strike.

Footage from the scene, in the area of northern Yemen that is the heartland of the Houthi rebels fighting the recognised government, showed children as young as six being pulled from the wreckage.

"The Coalition is targeting the militants responsible for planning and targeting civilians which resulted in killing of one and injuring 11 in Jazan", it said.

The Huthis have in recent months ramped up missile attacks against Saudi Arabia, which Riyadh usually says it intercepts.

A U.S. military spokeswoman said USA forces were not involved in Thursday's air strike.

Yemen's war has left almost 10,000 people dead since 2015 and unleashed what the United Nations describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

There was a horrifying attack Thursday in Yemen - a Middle Eastern country torn apart by a 3-year-old civil war.
