  • Saudi Arabia Expels Canadian Ambassador, To Withdraw Students From Canada Over Women's Rights Criticism

The United States said Tuesday that both Canada and Saudi Arabia are "close partners" of the USA, and asked the Saudi government for more information of the detention of several activists.

The Canadian Foreign Minister, through a spokeswoman, justified the interference in the domestic affairs of another country by saying that Canada stands up for women's rights, human rights, and freedom of expression. Samar is a vocal campaigner for her brother Raif Badawi, a blogger who was arrested in Saudi Arabia in 2012. Saudi authorities accused Ottawa of interfering with its internal affairs.

Just two months ago, Saudi women were given the right to drive a vehicle, yet several of the country's most prominent women's rights activists - including some who fought for years to drive - were arrested earlier this year on national security grounds. Not surprisingly, Bahrain and the UAE have joined Saudi Arabia's side of the argument.

A weekend story by KTW that said TRU could lose one-tenth of its worldwide students due to Saudi Arabia cutting off relationships with Canada and ordering its students to return home was wrong.

Saudi Arabia's state media threatened Toronto in this grim tweet.

Momani called it, "getting tough on Canada", which she said other countries in the region might welcome if they view Canadian foreign policy to be led by human rights concerns.

"Canada stands together with the Badawi family in this hard time, and we continue to strongly call for the release of both Raif and Samar Badawi", Freeland tweeted. His wife, Ensaf Haidar, lives in Canada and received Canadian citizenship in July at a Canada Day ceremony with their three children.

Saudi Arabian Airlines, via the official Saudi Press Agency, announced Monday it will suspend all flights to and from Toronto as of Monday Aug. 13, the Globe and Mail reported.

In an earlier response to Freeland's tweet, the Foreign Ministry of Saudi Arabia issued a statement ordering Canadian Ambassador Dennis Horak to leave the country within 24 hours.

Last March, Mr Trudeau was defending the deal in the House of Commons, arguing that "the exports are consistent with our foreign and defence policies, including human rights".

The first Canadian source said Ottawa had no regrets about speaking out on human rights in Saudi Arabia. While total trade between Canada and Saudi Arabia averages around $4 billion annually, the market had been considered relatively stable by Canadian grain exporters, notably those who specialize in barley. Saudi Arabia's sudden sharp response to criticism shows the limits of reforms by Saudi Arabia's 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who runs its day-to-day government.

Financial Times reporter Ahmed Al Omran tweeted that students will be transferred to schools in the US, UK, Australia, and New Zealand, citing Saudi state TV.

Armored tanks and personnel carriers have been Canada's biggest recent export to the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia says it will withdraw all of its students studying in Canada in an intensifying feud between the two countries.
