Aussies eye PGA bounce-back after WGC slide

  • Tiger Woods is targeting a first Ryder Cup appearance as a player for six years

Tiger Woods struggled on Saturday, taking himself out of contention with a 3-over 73 after knocking in just one birdie on the day.

"I'm glad I finally played well around here", said Thomas, who claimed his first victory in an elite World Golf Championships event on a course where hasn't fared so well in the past.

The world No.3 has 2014 WGC-Bridgestone victor Rory McIlroy (67) and Ian Poulter (70) snapping at his heels three shots back.

After a 304 yard drive on the 410-yard par-4 10th, Woods chipped his third shot to 8 feet, which he rolled for two-putt bogey on the hole.

Woods opened with a bogey, bounced back with three birdies over his next four holes and looked like he might make a move with his birdie on the 12th.

And, armed with a comfortable four-stroke lead with five to play, Thomas ensured he stayed out of trouble and eased home with five rock-solid pars to win on 15 under - making him the final champion at Firestone as the event moves to Memphis next year.

He hit only five of 14 fairways and just 10 of 18 greens but had his fewest putts of the week with 27.

"Well, today I was just trying to be as aggressive as possible and fire at everything", said Woods, whose tie for 31st was his third-worst at this tournament dating to 1999. After winning last year's Tour Championship he revealed a list that ranged from the predictable (win on Tour) to the amazingly detailed (finish the season ranked in the top 30 in scrambling). The list of golfers without major championships should be getting shorter, but instead it seems like it's getting deeper and possibly even better.

"I'm going to have to", Woods said.

Former World No.1 Day pulled within two shots of Thomas when he rattled off three straight birdies starting at the 10th hole, but a series of errant tee shots and poor recoveries resulted in back-to-back bogeys from the 13th.

Their relationship goes back more than a decade, back to junior golf days and at rival colleges, where each could hold their own share of bragging rights.

"He's got a nasty streak in him, which I think you need out here".

"I have putted pretty much with the same putter all year".

"Obviously we're all thinking of (Lyle) and it would be very nice to obviously have a good week", Leishman said.

Bridgestone is also Tiger's last chance to prepare for the final major of the calendar year: the PGA Championship next weekend in Missouri.

His grandparents, Paul and Phyllis Thomas, watched him win for the first time on the PGA Tour.
