  • England v India – Specsavers First Test – Day One – Edgbaston

Dawid Malan had an lbw scare against Ashwin, up the pitch and just outside the line on impact, only to go the same way to Shami when the seamer pinned him from round the wicket.

England were bowled out for 287 before reducing India to 50-3 and 100-5.

England were on course for a substantial first-innings total while Root (80) and his fellow Yorkshireman Bairstow (70) were sharing a fourth-wicket stand of 104 in only 23 overs. Kohli has taken that prediction and run with it. A 35-run partnership between Adil Rashid (13) and Curran raised visions of a fight back but Ishant Sharma (1/46) finally got return for his hard toil, trapping Rashid lbw with a sharp in-swinger.

Virat Kohli took a giant stride towards exorcising the ghosts of 2014 with a masterful century as he singlehandedly pulled India out of the woods against England on an eventful second day of the first Test.

As if to add insult to injury the very next ball Stokes drew an edge from Hardik Panda and Alastair Cook put the ball down at first slip.

England definitely won that session, but will they end up ruing those two drop off Kohli?

Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli follows the ball after playing a shot during the second day of the first test cricket match between England and India at Edgbaston in Birmingham, England, Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018.

On 97, Stokes dropped short and Kohli leaned back to punch the ball through point for four, before letting out a loud roar in celebration.

After batting first, England did not get off to a start that they would have expected.

Anderson improved his length and troubled Kohli for the next two overs, before Rashid brought things to a close in this session.

Buttler was injured diving to his left at gully in an attempt to catch Kohli off Anderson, the ball appearing to clip his fingertip, though in a boost for England he was cleared of any major damage.

India's powerful top-order will now be expected to pile on the runs when they bat.

That was when Sam Curren was thrown the ball and in the spate of eight deliveries the left-arm pace ace got three wickets.

Umesh Yadav (1no) survived the over though and Kohli's big moment came as he cut the ball away for four and celebrated in typically exuberant fashion.

The opening Test between India and England is now underway and the Indian captain came to bat after Murali Vijay was dismissed by Sam Curran with the score at 50 in the 14th over.

At stumps, England were 9 for 1 in their second innings with an overall lead of 22 runs.
