English club Leicester City transfer Turkish defender

  • The transfer market can be a chaotic but occasionally rather predictable place

The English Premier League's (EPL) transfer window closed on August 9 with more than 1 billion euros spent by the teams.

In contrast to the changes in west London, Tottenham in the north of the English capital has yet to add a single signing ahead of its first season in a new 62,000-seater stadium.

Bridge said: "If you look at the top 10 individual players, you've got three players over £60m, reportedly, and another six over £30m so the value of the players appears to be steadily nudging up each year".

Yet, based on the World Cup performances of Golden Boot victor Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris and Christian Eriksen among others, there is still plenty for Mauricio Pochettino to look forward to.

Barcelona made several bids for the player but never matched Chelsea's asking price and when it seemed the Catalans could not go further after their third bid of £65m was rejected by Chelsea, they chose to settle for a lesser valued, Bordeaux player Malcom as replacement, while Willian returned to Chelsea after his World Cup break.

It just shows the incredible difference in spending power between the Premier League and everywhere else and with £100 million prize money to stay in England's top tier it's no surprise clubs want to spend big.

After Thibaut Courtois made clear his desire to return to Spain to be closer to his children, Chelsea set their sights on young Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to become their new number one.

Football finance expert Rob Wilson of Sheffield Hallam University said: "Clubs invested heavily past year when we saw nearly £1.5bn being spent".

The latter's two costly errors in last season's Champions League final saw Liverpool look for a replacement and led them to Roma's Brazil worldwide Alisson Becker. The only one top-level conversation between the clubs was Spurs enquiring about two of United's players.

Interest in Barcelona defender Yerry Mina was tempered by prohibitive agent demands, with the Colombia global instead heading to Everton. The 23-year-old Mina, a Colombia defender, cost 31 million euros ($36 million), while 25-year-old Portugal midfielder Gomes moved to Goodison Park on a season-long loan. Everton has already broken its transfer record in the off-season by paying Watford £40-million ($67.07-million) for Richarlison, a forward who didn't even make Brazil's World Cup squad.

Fulham, promoted to the Premier League last season, have splashed the cash since winning the Championship play-off final in May.

Ayew, who has 11 goals in 49 appearances for Ghana, scored 11 times for Swansea last season as he impressed in a struggling side.
