First lady Melania Trump's parents have been sworn in as USA citizens.

First lady Melania Trump's parents were sworn in as USA citizens in New York City on Thursday.

President Trump has frequently slammed the process under which legal United States residents can sponsor the admission of family members and other people who are not close relatives.

Trump has taken a hardline on immigration policy, criticizing so-called chain migration.

The first lady, born Melanija, changed her name to Melania Knauss when she started modelling.

Under US law they must have been permanent residents for five years before applying to become citizens, and the time to process an application can take several months thereafter.

They arrived and departed from a Manhattan federal building escorted by Homeland Security police.

The Knavses' lawyer said their ceremony was kept private for "security reasons".

According to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services website, an average naturalisation application in NY takes between 11 and 21 months and is dependent on numerous character and residency requirements.

Ana Navarro, a Republican strategist and political commentator, tweeted, "I guess when it's Melania's Family, it's "family reunification" and should be applauded".

The ceremony has prompted questions about Donald Trump's flagrant disregard for practising what he preaches, as the First Lady's parents obtained citizenship through a policy he has vocally denounced.

The Times noted that the couple would have to have their green cards for five years to become eligible for citizenship.

The Knavs' immigration attorney accompanied the couple to the ceremony.

Wildes told ABC News on Thursday that the Knavses had engaged in "a wonderful journey like most have - millions have - in getting citizenship and waiting the requisite period of time". When Melania Trump began her modeling career, while still a teenager, the whole family sensed opportunity, according to those who knew them in Slovenia.

Melania Trump became a USA citizen in 2006, after entering the United States on a coveted Einstein visa for people of "extraordinary ability" in 2001 when she was working as a model.

Viktor and Amalija Knavs listen as their attorney makes a statement in New York, Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018.

In 1996, she moved to New York City where she worked as a model and met Donald Trump two years later.

She settled in NY in 1996 and met Mr Trump two years later. Now, we're certain his shameless hypocrisy sees no boundaries.
