Herbicide Linked to Cancer Found in Children’s Favorite Cereal

  • Cereal killers Monsanto weedkiller that can ‘probably’ cause cancer found in children’s breakfasts

A number of popular breakfast cereals, granolas, oatmeal and snack bars could possibly contain a unsafe weed killer called glyphosate, produced by the Monsanto company, according to a report broadcast on New York's ABC Channel 7 Eyewitness News.

Last week, a jury in California ordered Monsanto to pay one man $289-million dollars in damages after he claimed the company's weed-killers caused his cancer.

A non-profit Environmental Working Group is making news today with the results of a study connecting some popular breakfast cereals with alleged harmful levels of a weed killer. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, the Monsanto weed killer that is the most heavily used pesticide in the U.S.

A study published in May by a team at the National Cancer Institute found no evidence linking glyphosate with cancer.

The company faces more trials involving other plaintiffs.

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the World Health Organisation's cancer agency, concluded that glyphosate was "probably carcinogenic to humans".

Bayer said in a statement: "Bayer is confident, based on the strength of the science, the conclusions of regulators around the world and decades of experience, that glyphosate is safe for use and does not cause cancer when used according to the label".

Faber said he's skeptical of EPA's glyphosate limits.

Amarelo also included, "Just because a pesticide level is legal in food doesn't mean that level is safe".

The environmental group said it chose to add a tenfold "margin of safety". (See those statements, as well as EWG's response, at the bottom of this article). In the USA, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) labeled glyphosate a carcinogen in 1985, but reversed its position in 1991. Sehar Iqbal, the manager food for life campaign, Greenpeace India said, "The current ban leaves out monocrotophos and glyphosate, which still leaves farmers, farm workers and rural families (especially children) at risk and poisons the soil affecting farmer livelihoods, not to mention seriously compromising the health of consumers", she said. The EPA has researched this issue and has set rules that we follow as do farmers who grow crops including wheat and oats.

"I was shocked", said Dr. Jennifer Lowry, who heads the Council on Environmental Health for the American Academy of Pediatrics. Quaker does not add glyphosate during any part of the milling process.

General Mills and Quaker Oats should volunteer to meet real health standards and make the effort to remove glyphosate from their products.

The Environmental Working Group says it has studied 45 samples of products made with oats and found glyphosate in all but 2. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other regulatory authorities in Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia, Korea, and elsewhere routinely review all approved pesticide products and have consistently reaffirmed that glyphosate does not cause cancer.

Scott Partridge, a vice president at Monsanto, the company that developed the herbicide and turned it into a popular weedkiller, told The New York Times he doesn't think it causes cancer. "And essentially we're just throwing it at them".
