India v England, 1st Test: Day Two in pictures

  • On a high Sam Curran took three wickets in eight balls

India threatened to make a mess of its target of 194 on Friday before Virat Kohli was left fighting the fire yet again.

England did not have to wait long for their first breakthrough as Broad (2/29) trapped Murali Vijay and then removed Shikhar Dhawan (13) caught behind.

It feels as though Anderson holds the key and it has been impossible to take your eyes off the battle between England's highest-ever wicket-taker and the India captain throughout this match.

Lokesk Rahul took both catches.

Virat Kohli single-handedly kept India in the first Test with his maiden hundred in England but the captain would still rate the memorable knock second to his 141 in a lost run-chase against Australia in Adelaide nearly four years ago.

With his maiden Test half-century, at once a game and courageous innings that was touched with brilliance at times, Curran breathed life into England's corpse on the third afternoon.

He ran out England captain Joe Root on the opening day, then rescued India's first innings with a gritty knock of 149 that ended a sorry run of test scores on English soil.

Malan and Root added 31 runs for the fourth wicket, and pushed England past 50 in the 17th over.

Earlier, India dismissed England for 180 in their second innings, with fast bowler Ishant Sharma taking five for 51 in 13 overs.

Afterwards, 20-year-old Curran and Adil Rashid (16) tried their best in a 48-run stand for the eighth wicket. So far in this match, Curran has put his imprint on two of them, with the ball on the second day and with the bat on the third: the mark, in other words, of a genuine all-rounder, and one who clearly has a sense of occasion.

Rahane caught first Malan at fourth slip in the 27th over.

Following scans on Thursday, England have confirmed Jos Buttler did not suffer a fractured finger in the morning session.

But Curran, after a couple of fortunate edges and being dropped in the slips on 13, found his form.

Curran, who bats left-handed as well as bowls, brought up his maiden Test fifty off a mere 54 balls in supreme style by lofting Sharma over extra-cover for six.
