The team would conduct aerial survey of the entire eastern stretch of the State and will visit the worst-hit areas in Idukki, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Ernakulam.

The Army rescued 30 tourists stranded in Munnar, reported the Hindustan Times.

A 24x7 monitoring cell has been set up at the Secretariat here to coordinate the relief works with various district collectors. "We stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Kerala in the wake of this calamity", the PM said in a tweet. I have assured all possible assistance from the Centre to the state government. The Tamil Nadu government had earlier announced a contribution of Rs 5 crore towards relief operations.

The chief minister has also asked people from across the state and beyond to donate generously to the CM's relief fund to help in the distribution of food and essential supplies.

The rain has led to a rise in water levels at dams in the affected districts. One of its shutters was opened on Thursday after a gap of 26 years.

Waynad district accounted for three deaths, while Kannur, Ernakulam and Palakkad two each, officials said. 29 persons lost their lives and 58,000 persons are shifted to relief camps.

The opening of the Cheruthoni dam saw people running helter-skelter to save their lives, trying to find a safe place to stay till the rains ceased and the water levels went down.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had described the flood situation in the state as "very grim" and it was for the first time in the history of the state that 24 dams had been opened at a time following the water level reaching maximum capacity.

Urging everyone to contribute generously to relief efforts, Vijayan said in a Facebook post that rebuilding the affected areas is going to be an arduous task.

Following the opening of the Idamalayar dam, the waters flooded the Periyar river and reached the compound of the Cochin worldwide airport, which was sbut for all arrivals in the afternoon.

With rivers and streams flowing in spate, people, particularly youngsters, have been asked to exercise caution.

Rajesh added that Kerala State Electricity Board had shut off the power supply to the area because of the flooding, as a precaution against electrocution. "The increase in water level downstream due to this limited discharge is estimated to be contained within the river banks", the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) said in a press release.

Meanwhile, Kochi Airport in a statement said flight operations are continuing uninterrupted and there has been no cancellations.
