  • Back us not Brussels on Iran, US ambassador tells Theresa May as he warns British businesses will lose trade

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has cancelled a visit to Iran, his press office said on Sunday, days after Baghdad announced it would comply with U.S. sanctions against Tehran.

In his article Sunday, Johnson said, "Only by presenting a united front can we exert the maximum possible pressure on the Iranian regime and get them to finally change course and put an end to their malign and reckless activities both at home and overseas".

The Iraqi prime minister will then head to Iranian capital Tehran on Wednesday to hold a series of meetings, French media reported.

The decision came after U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from a landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers. The historic deal, backed by the US, Russia, and China, and negotiated by the European Union, saw the lifting of economic sanctions against Iran for ditching its nuclear program.

Ambassador Woody Johnson cautioned there would be trade consequences for Britain, which he described as the closest US ally, unless it breaks with the European Union and follows Trump in re-imposing sanctions on Tehran.

Britain's May might face a party leadership challenge later in the year, possibly from Boris Johnson, the former foreign minister who says she should be more like Trump.

The stiff economic sanctions ratchet up pressure on the Islamic Republic despite statements of deep dismay from European allies.

Johnson's comments come less than a week after the Trump administration on Tuesday reimposed a raft of sanctions on Iran that affect, among other things, the purchase or acquisition of U.S. dollars by the Iranian government, the country's auto industry and trade in gold or precious metals. Shortly after the sanctions snapped back into place last week, Trump warned in a tweet that countries doing business with Iran would "NOT be doing business with the United States".

Trump said on Friday he was doubling steel and aluminium tariffs on Turkey as part of an ongoing row over the detention of American pastor Andrew Brunson and other issues. A tense North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in July also saw Trump beat up on allies over their defense spending and accused Germany of being a "captive" of Russian Federation.
