John McCain - a former Vietnam prisoner of war, 6-term U.S. Senator from Arizona and 2008 GOP Presidential nominee who battled an aggressive form of brain cancer in the latter part of his storied career - has died.

Sen. John McCain's wife, Cindy McCain, and daughter, Meghan McCain, released poignant statements of thanks and remembrances Saturday evening just after it was announced that the Arizona Republican, 81, had passed away at his home in Arizona.

McCain was diagnosed with glioblastoma back in July 2017. the same type of cancer that took the life of Senator Ted Kennedy back in 2009.

"Our family is immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the past year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John's many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers", the family's statement concluded.

Jon Kyl and McCain's wife, Cindy, as possible successors, the Washington Post reported.

"The days and years to come will not be the same without my dad - but they will be good days, filled with life and love, because of the example he lived for us", she wrote in a statement shared on Twitter.

Two months after winning the Republican party nomination for president, the 72-year-old Senator addressed the nation from Rockefeller Center.

He also advocated support of the country's Native American population and condemned torture and "enhanced interrogation" techniques such as waterboarding used in the War on Terror.

Senator McCain was unabashedly a conservative - succeeding Barry Goldwater as a senator from Arizona - but would reach across the partisan divide for great causes.

He ran unsuccessfully for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000, then won it in 2008.

McCain repeatedly hammered Barack Obama for his expressed willingness to meet with Iran's leaders and later on led the charge against the 2015 deal spearheaded by Obama that swapped sanctions relief for a partial rollback of Iran's nuclear program.

Trump has been criticised for his feud with McCain, which started after he underplayed the senator's renowned military service. Throughout his life, however, he offered a full-throated defence of an America that was active and engaged in the world.

In his final months in the Senate, McCain styled himself nearly as the conscience of Congress, demanding his colleagues stand up and act as a check on the Trump presidency.

It's an open question as to whether these views have a future in his party.

As Congress becomes increasingly partisan, McCain serves as a symbol of the enduring Maverick. Agree with him or disagree, that is undeniably a most appropriate epitaph.

The late senator requested that both Obama and Bush deliver eulogies at his funeral, USA media reported.

"My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain, "President Donald Trump tweeted at 5:44 p.m. Our hearts and prayers are with you!"

Tributes were also paid from the other side of the political spectrum.

That earned him the ire of Trump, who regularly blamed McCain for his failure to reform Obama-era health care laws and refused to say his name when signing the eponymous "John S. McCain National Defense Authorisation Act".

In a joint statement, Michelle and Barack Obama wrote, "Few of us have been tested the way John once was, or required to show the kind of courage that he did".

'John McCain showed all of us how to bridge the divide between a protester and a POW, and how to find common ground even when it was improbable.

Former vice president Joe Biden, who developed a friendship with Mr McCain while they served together in the Senate, said the Arizona politician will "cast a long shadow".

"Some lives are so vivid, it is hard to imagine them ended".
