  • India deploys military to save southern residents trapped by flood

After conducting an aerial survey on Saturday, to get a first-hand knowledge of the flood-affected area, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sanctioned a solatium of Rs 500 crore to the rain-battered state. We must all contribute to help the distressed and the affected people. Various central ministries have organised food, water and medicines which include 3,00,000 food packets, 6,00,000 tonnes of milk, 14,00,000 litres of drinking water and 150 potable water purification kits with capacity of 1,00,000 litre each.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, while giving the latest figures, told the media late on Saturday that the flood relief work is going on in full swing and things are slowly coming under control and more helicopters and personnel would be engaged in the rescue and relief operations on Sunday.

According to a lawmaker in Pathanamthitta district, some 10,000 people were stranded and in grave danger unless they were rescued urgently.

Cabinet Secretary PK Sinha chaired a meeting on Friday where he directed these agencies to provide boats, helicopters, life jackets, life buoys, raincoats, gumboots, inflatable tower lights among other things.

"The nation stands firmly with Kerala in this hour". Heavy rainfall was predicted for the day in all districts except Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Kasaragod, said the chief minister. Mobile phones are not reachable.

For the last two weeks several rescue operations have been going on and schools and community centres have been converted into relief camps for the thousands of people already rescued.

Modi said 38 helicopters had been deployed for search and rescue operations in the state, which has a population of more than 33 million.

Other distressed messages were shared online from people trapped inside temples and hospitals as well as their homes. As a result, both domestic and worldwide flights to Kochi are being diverted to other destinations such as Trivendrum and Calicut.

They are taking shelter in more than 2,000 relief camps.

"Special emergency fix teams have been set up and additional trained manpower will be deployed from dealerships in neighbouring states to expedite turnaround time for the repairs".

More than 300,000 people have been displaced since August 8 when the Kerala rains began and a record amount of rain fell in the southern Indian state.
