Largest wildfire in California history still growing

Two firefighters and four residents, including two children, were also killed.

"Today a higher pressure system brought warmer weather, drying, and strong winds to the region", CalFire said in an evening update.

As for the northeast section of the fire that is moving further into the Mendocino National Forest, Blankenheim said firefighters were building lines around several cabins on private property near the edges of the Snow Mountain Wilderness as the fire continued east below.

Northern California is grappling with one of the largest wildfires in the history of California. It was 45 percent contained.

Firefighters predict they'll fully contain the Mendocino Complex fire by August 15.

Crews battling the Mendocino Complex fire on Monday were focusing on keeping flames from breaking through fire lines on a ridge above the foothill communities of Nice, Lucerne, Glen Haven and Clearlake Oaks, Tricia Austin, a spokeswoman for Cal Fire said.

A seventh death has been reported in the battle against the Carr Fire.

But state fire officials, climate scientists and ecologists say Trump's assertion is baffling - and false.

"It's the embers, not the fire itself, that destroy most homes", said Steve Conboy, a construction expert whose company develops fire-resistant chemicals to apply to wood.

The Mendocino Complex Fire expanded almost 80 percent over the weekend and has now scorched more than 283,000 acres north of San Francisco, forcing more than 20,000 people to evacuate and destroying at least 75 homes so far.

The Ranch Fire is 225,001 acres and containment has decreased to 21% - making this fire the sixth largest in state history by itself.

It is only 30% contained so far, with authorities warning it could take another week to get the blaze under control.

But that's "a totally separate issue" from fire management, said William Stewart, a forestry specialist at the University of California at Berkeley.

Exhausted firefighters across the state are trying to contain 17 major fires that are burning in hot, dry and windy conditions.

Keith Gilless is a UC Berkeley professor of forest economics and chairman of the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection. It's unclear if this is directly connected to the fire, but PG&E has been doing work to rebuild and restring power lines in the areas where the fire hit, so it's entirely possible that a line may have been de-energized as part of this continuing work.

The disaster declaration that Trump approved for California on Sunday makes available federal funding to state, local and tribal governments "on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the fix or replacement of facilities damaged by the wildfires and high winds in Shasta County".

"The water that reaches the ocean is what's left after we've diverted most of the water away for cities and farms, and what little is left is barely enough for California's aquatic ecosystems and the fisheries", he said.
