Michael Vaughan is alarmed by England’s dismal batting at Trent Bridge

  • India vs England 3rd Test at Trent Bridge: FPJ's Dream XI for India and England

After four back-to-back failures in England, Rahane finally looked good with the bat as he scored a fluent 81 runs and added 159 runs stand with Virat Kohli.

Prior to this match, they had won only one of 11 Tests in England and passed 200 just once in their previous nine completed innings.

India's batting efforts in the first two Tests had left them sufficiently traumatised that they were making two changes to their top seven.

By stumps, India's lead had swelled to 292 with Cheteshwar Pujara batting on 33, his best contribution of the series, and Virat Kohli on 8.

India would still have walked away feeling they could have taken a lot more from the first day, but it was a collective show they can be proud of.

It took the introduction of Woakes, man of the match at Lord's, to improve England's morning.

England - 2-0 up and aiming to seal a series victory - looked set to have their decision to field first vindicated as the ball moved around on a grassy surface.

It says everything that this was the third time in less than two years that all 10 wickets in an England Test innings have crashed in a single session, this latest debacle following those in Dhaka in 2016 and Auckland earlier this year. But it will take something extraordinary now to stop Kohli's India at least giving themselves a chance to pull off something special at Southampton and the Oval.

The hosts, though, were blunted in the afternoon, with Stokes and Rashid disappointing.

Cook feathered Ishant Sharma behind, two balls after being dropped at slip by Pujara off the same bowler, while Jennings edged Jasprit Bumrah after poking at a wide delivery - wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant claiming both catches en route to five for the innings on debut. English pacer Stuart Broad, James Anderson and Chris Woakes picked up 3 wickets each, while spinner Adil Rashid bagged the important wicket of India skipper Virat Kohli, who missed his century by 3 runs.

Watch day three of the third Test between England and India, from Trent Bridge, live on Sky Sports Cricket (channel 404) and Sky Sports Main Event (channel 401) from 10.30am on Monday.

"When you see a team dominate like England did at Lord's you get a bit bored but today has been a proper contest".

Joe Root yesterday seemed unsure what to do if he won the toss.

"I'm looking forward to seeing more of Pant". Hardik Pandya (14 off 58 balls) was ready to grind it out before Anderson snapped him up with the last ball of the day.

The remaining India batters didn't last long as England seamers cleaned the tail easily.
