Presumed Korean War dead arrive in Hawaii

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un make history in the first sitting between USA and North Korean leaders, as they negotiate the end of the nuclear stand-off.

American Veterans (AMVETS) National Commander Marion Polk said, "We are tremendously grateful to everyone who has worked so faithfully for so many years to locate and repatriate the remains of American service members who have fallen in battle all over the world".

The boxes are believed to hold the remains of servicemen from the US and other United Nations member countries who fought to support South Korea during the war. About 5,300 were lost in what is now North Korea.

The remains were then moved in gray vans to an airfield where US and South Korean soldiers loaded them one by one into transport planes.

As the remains return home, officials have asked families for help with the identification process, according to the Military Times. Other items on their joint memorandum, such as a pledge to "work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula", remain unaddressed.

It could be hard to find out if the remains are even American military members.

Military personnel bring in the presumed remains of U.S. soldiers in 55 caskets draped with American flags into Hanger 19 Joint base Pearl Harbor Hickam on August 1, 2018 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

That was the case with US negotiations with the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and more recently with Iran, "which continued to build more centrifuges capable of producing nuclear material even as it negotiated with the United States to limit those capabilities", Wit said.

Still, the initial field forensic review indicated the "remains are what North Korea said they were", Byrd said.

"UNC never leaves troops behind, living or deceased, and will continue the mission of repatriation until every service member returns home", it added.

The bones' return was part of an agreement reached during a June summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The Sanumdong factory produced two Hwasong-15 ICBMs, North Korea's longest-range missiles, but the USA official noted that Pyongyang still had not tested a reliable re-entry vehicle capable of surviving a high-velocity trip through the Earth's atmosphere and delivering a nuclear warhead.

There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea, ' Trump said in a Twitter post after his historic summit with Kim in Singapore last month.

Additionally, new satellite imagery from the Sohae Satellite Launching Station on North Korea's west coast suggests workers are dismantling an engine test stand, in line with a promise made to Trump. Pompeo said there was "an very bad long way to go" before North Korea could no longer be viewed as a nuclear threat. "This is a facility where they build ICBMs and space-launch vehicles". But examination showed that the remains were from more than 208 individuals.

"We see them going to work, just as before", a U.S. official told the newspaper. Relations between the USA and North Korea would have to continue to improve - otherwise, it may be a long time before any more remains are repatriated.

"They are likely to be American remains", he said.

While the fighting in the Korean War lasted from 1950 until 1953, the war never formally ended because a treaty was never signed, though an armistice was struck dividing the peninsula in two. Indeed, the commitments regarding its nuclear weapons program were so vague as to be nearly meaningless, in my view. However, while US intelligence agencies agree that the Kangson site is used to enrich uranium, not all European intelligence officials are so sure. The US military presence in South Korea is the backbone of its security commitment to South Korea, which doesn't' have nuclear weapons.

Australia, Belgium, France and the Philippines have yet to recover some of their war dead from North Korea.

North Korea handed over the remains last week. Liquid fueling can also take a fairly long time to complete, giving USA spy satellites a period of time to see launch preparations underway.
