Seagal has also been one of Putin's biggest supporters, and defended the Russian leader against charges of USA election meddling during an interview with Piers Morgan on "Good Morning Britain" previous year.

President Vladimir Putin presented a Russian passport to US actor Steven Seagal in 2016, saying he hoped it would serve as a symbol of how fractious ties between Moscow and Washington were starting to improve.

Action-movie star Steven Seagal has played a former Central Intelligence Agency agent, a hit man and a killer of criminals.

Actor Steven Seagal is seen here speaking to CNN on January 25, 2013.

Action movie star Steven Seagal has been appointed as a Russian envoy to the U.S., according to a statement from Moscow's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Russian foreign ministry likened Seagal's new role to that of United Nations goodwill ambassadors, prominent individuals who volunteer to highlight important areas of the U.N.'s work.

According to the statement, the action star's role will be to promote US-Russia relations "in the humanitarian sphere", adding that the role will include collaboration "in the sphere of culture, public and youth exchanges".

The Russian Embassy in the United States also confirmed the appointment on Twitter.

"I've always had a very strong desire to do all I can to help improve Russian-American relations", he told the Kremlin-backed television station RT. He starred in film such as Under Siege and Above The Law.

President Donald Trump has been criticized for his reluctance to speak out against Russian Federation or President Vladimir Putin, and the addition to Steven Seagal into the mix isn't going to help matters. Later that month, Putin, who has been described as a fan of the martial arts that Seagal practices in his movies, personally presented the actor with a Russian passport.

Seagal was seen at the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation and was also among the guests when Putin was sworn in for a fourth term in May. Seagal says: "I'll never, ever falter".
