Calls to close a Brooklyn nail salon are growing louder Monday, days after video was shared online apparently capturing employees attacking patrons with brooms, dust pans and, allegedly, acetone.
A video showing the Friday night incident was posted to Facebook by a customer who watched the melee at New Red Apple Nail in East Flatbush. The black women and the nail salon employees start pushing and shoving each other, causing the scene to devolve into chaos as one manicurist picks up a chair and begins swinging it.
A family member of the victim says the situation was blown out of proportion, but community activists say it's nothing new. Many of them rallied outside the shop Monday to protest the violence.
Police said Zhing was taken to the hospital before being arrested because of visible injuries to her face and body, PIX 11 reports. It's not that serious.
Huiyue Zheng, 32, was charged with assault and weapon possession, according to police.
Thomas was also arrested and charged with assault, menacing, and harassment.
The Brooklyn District Attorney's Office says prosecutors are examining more evidence and may alter the charges.
The incident has inflamed racial tensions, and prompted calls for black residents to spend their money elsewhere.
"It felt like I was in a movie", the grandmother told local news outlet, News12 Brooklyn.
"There is no respect for people in this neighborhood", Gavin Gibbs, a 49-year-old East Flatbush resident, said to the New York Daily News. "If we go into an establishment to get something done, and then we end up being assaulted, something certainly needs to happen to that establishment". Several people held signs stating "Black $$$ matters" and chanted "black dollars matter".
At one point, an Asian man steps outside the salon and is booed. In the official complaint reported by The New York Post, the employees claimed the customer slapped and dragged an employee across the floor.
Similar comments appeared on a livestream of the protests taking place outside the salon.
According to News12, the salon closed for the rest of the day.
