  • The plane crashed in a forest near Hergiswil

Police said those killed were couples from the Swiss cantons of Zurich, Thurgau, Lucerne, Schwyz, Zug and Vaud, along with a three-member family from Austria and three crew members from Thurgau and Zurich.

The Junker JU52 HB-HOT aircraft, built in Germany in 1939 and now a collectors item, belongs to JU-Air, a company with links to the Swiss air force, the ATS news agency reported.

Police said they are not aware of any distress call from the aircraft before it crashed.

He said that officials expect the investigation of the cause to be "relatively complex".

Officials said Sunday the vintage aircraft appeared to hit the ground near-vertically and at a high speed.

In a separate incident on Saturday morning, another small plane crashed near the town of Hergiswil, in central Switzerland, killing all four family members on board.

He said officials have essentially ruled out a collision with another aircraft or hitting an obstacle such as a wire. There also was no indication of any "external influence", he said, indicating that authorities don't suspect foul play.

Authorities are investigating what caused the deadly crash.

The crash occurred above the Swiss Alpine resort of Flims, an area popular with hikers and skiers. Its pilots are ex-military and professional pilots, all volunteers.

The plane that crashed had logged 10,187 hours of flying time, he said, adding that it underwent maintenance after every 35 hours of flight - most recently at the end of July. The plane holds 17 passengers, two pilots and a flight attendant. We can not guarantee that it is suitable for the visually or hearing impaired. JU-AIR also suspended flights with the remaining two Ju-52s until further notice.

The plane was operated by Ju-Air, a Swiss company that offers tours with vintage former Swiss military aircraft.
