  • President Trump does a re-election

In a post on Twitter, Trump also denied reports in the Washington Post and CNN that he was concerned his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., could be in legal trouble because of the meeting with the Russians, including a lawyer with Kremlin ties.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating U.S. intelligence findings that Russians conspired to sway the election in Mr Trump's favour.

While collusion is not a technical legal charge, Mr Mueller could bring conspiracy charges if he finds that any campaign member worked with Russian Federation to break United States law.

Trump was responding to a Washington Post report this weekend that although he does not think his eldest son intentionally broke the law, he is anxious that Trump Jr. may have unintentionally stumbled into legal jeopardy and is embroiled in Mueller's investigation largely because of his connection to the president.

US President Donald Trump acknowledged on Sunday that his son met with Russians in 2016 at Trump Tower to get information on his election opponent Hillary Clinton, saying it was "totally legal" and "done all the time in politics".

Russian Federation has repeatedly denied claims it interfered in the November 2016 presidential elections, where Mr Trump defeated Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

What did Donald Trump know, and when?

He concluded by further distancing himself from the meeting his son arranged, writing, "I did not know about it!"

Why does his tweet matter?

Mr Trump also tweeted about the fires in California, which have destroyed dozens of homes and killed at least seven people.

When the meeting was first reported by the New York Times, Donald Trump Jr said in a statement that he and Ms Veselnitskaya had mostly discussed a suspended programme for Americans to adopt Russian children.

"Most politicians would have gone to a meeting like the one Don jr attended in order to get info on an opponent", Trump wrote on Twitter.

Trump's tweet, however, conflicts with a statement that Trump Jr. released to the New York Times in July 2017, as the newspaper prepared to report about the meeting.

Trump and his son have both said then-candidate Trump had no advance knowledge of the meeting and that the meeting itself was not useful to the campaign.

Why is the Trump Tower meeting controversial?

Betraying no surprise or misgivings about the offer from a hostile foreign power, Trump Jr. replied: "If it's what you say I love it especially later in the summer".

His apparently enthusiastic response to the offer of information about Mrs Clinton could also breach conspiracy laws.

Amid public uproar over the meeting, the president's son was forced to release follow-up statements, ultimately acknowledging that the meeting's true objective had been to get dirt about Hillary Clinton from a lawyer he had been told was working for the Russian government. Working with a foreign national with the intent of influencing a USA election could violate multiple laws, according to legal experts.

"The question is what law, statute or rule or regulation has been violated, and nobody has pointed to one", said Jay Sekulow, one of Trump's attorneys, on ABC's This Week.

USA media reported a year ago that some of the president's advisers feared the extent of the president's intervention could place him and some of his inner circle in legal jeopardy.
