U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday slammed the powerful Koch-led political operation as "globalist" and "a total joke", rejecting the conservative group amid signs of a growing public fissure between the president and business over trade.

With months to go before a crucial Senate election in North Dakota, the Koch network has not offered any funds to the Republican candidate.

Emily Seidel, CEO of Americans for Prosperity, explained it for The Hill: "I know this is uncomfortable, it's uncomfortable for me too". The Kochs also pledged almost $400 million more in January to support Republicans in this year's midterms, CNBC reported.

Trump has complained to confidants that the Kochs "never respected" him and "refused to get on board" his electoral movement, according to a person familiar with his views but not authorized to discuss private conversations.

"Any protectionism at any level, certainly at a national level, is very detrimental", Charles Koch told reporters at the event in Colorado Springs, Colo. Later, Koch political associates railed against Trump's recent $12 billion in emergency aid to farmers as a "bailout of bad policy". And some Trump loyalists were furious with the Kochs' work to undermine Trump and his agenda even before Monday's news dropped.

"The Kochs had zero to do with Trump's win in 2016", former White House counselor Steve Bannon told the AP. Instead they'll back Senator Heidi Heitkamp, the Democrat, because she voted to deregulate banks.

The Koch network largely ignored the criticism.
