Air quality advisories remain in place for the entire Okanagan as well as Metro Vancouver.

Yes, that's smoke in the air. "I was sucking air".

People in the Puget Sound area are being encouraged to limit the time they spend outdoors and avoid exercising or strenuous activity outside, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Air circulation patterns are bringing in smoke from wildfires in California and OR to the south, Canadian wildfires to the north, and the Maple Fire on the Olympic Peninsula to the west.

Papish said the wildfire conditions seen this week are the continuation of a trend.

Public-health officials continued to warn of unhealthy air across many parts of the Pacific Northwest as wildfires sent thick smoke across the region, and the National Weather Service issued an air quality alert for much of Central and Eastern Washington and northern Idaho through today. These particles easily make their way indoors due to their small size.

Those who are particularly at risk are people afflicted with heart or lung disease, asthma, diabetes, infants, children, adults over 65, pregnant women, and those who have suffered a stroke.

If you start having chest discomfort, are short of breath, or start coughing or wheezing, you should see a doctor.

"It's going to get better", he said.

"It's just kind of something you half-imagine through the smoke", he said.

Unfortunately, both Mass and the clean air agency expect the smoke to return - perhaps as early as next week.

In Metro Vancouver on Wednesday, breathing the air was the equivalent of smoking 3.3 cigarettes, according to the app.

With air now rated as unhealthy, even healthy people may have symptoms such as dry eyes, coughing and sinus irritation.

He said the mixture of air pollutants aren't identical in cigarette smoke and smog "but it does provide people with a reference point" on how risky smog can be. Mass said particulate readings from the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency's Duwamish monitoring site have registered the worst 24-hour average air quality since the agency began keeping records in 2000.
