Aretha Franklin is "gravely ill" according to reports.

Franklin, 76, is reportedly surrounded by her family and close friends in Detroit.

Fans from around the world have offered thoughts and prayers to Franklin and her family.

In an interview a year ago, Franklin said she had plans to "retire" after the release of her new album.

'I will be recording, but this will be my previous year in concert, ' she announced during a Detroit radio interview that February.

This is exclusive, and heart breaking for me and for the family and friends of the great Aretha Franklin.

In 2010 she underwent surgery for a tumor, but later disputed reports that she had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

HuffPost UK has contacted a representative for Aretha for comment, and is awaiting a response.

The musician was forced to cancel two live shows in March on doctor's orders, making her last live performance at the Elton John AIDS Foundation in NY last November. An upcoming compilation, "The Atlantic Singles Collection 1967-1970", a 34-song survey chronicling her early years at the label, is due out in September.

The latest reports came just about nine months after other reports of her failing health circulated online before they were debunked in late November.

In previous years, all three of Aretha's brothers and sisters have died of cancer.

Over the course of her five-decade career, Aretha has earned 18 Grammy awards and sold over 75 million records. Her undisclosed illness has resulted in several concert cancelations.

Franklin became the first woman in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame when she was inducted back in 1987.
