A former Vatican ambassador to the United States has demanded that the Pope resign for what he says is his complicity in covering up the clerical sex abuse scandal.
Vigano, 77, a conservative whose hardline anti-gay views are well known, urged the reformist pope to resign over what he called Francis' own culpability in covering up McCarrick's crimes.
"I will say sincerely that I must say this, to you", he said to journalists, "and all of you who are interested: Read the document carefully and judge it for yourselves".
Vigano, who was posted to the USA from 2011 to 2016, said his two predecessors had told the Holy See about the claims against McCarrick and that Vigano himself sent at least two memos.
"He (Pope Francis) knew from at least June 23, 2013, that McCarrick was a serial predator", wrote Vigano", adding that "he knew that he was a corrupt man, he covered for him to the bitter end".
A Cardinal and the Archbishop of Washington since McCarrick's 2006 resignation, 77-year-old USA -born Wuerl issued a statement on August 27 in which he claimed to never have been informed about the sanctions levied against his predecessor for alleged sexual misconduct, thus undercutting Vigano's claims.
Some claims have already been corroborated: The National Catholic Register got Pope Benedict's office to confirm that he'd sanctioned McCarrick.
"The cardinal was to leave the seminary where he was living", the archbishop wrote, saying: "He was also forbidden to celebrate (Mass) in public, to participate in public meetings, to give lectures, to travel, with the obligation of dedicating himself to a life of prayer and penance". It was the first resignation of a Cardinal in connection with sex abuse claims.
