Yellowstone NP superintendent: Man taunting bison was 'reckless, dangerous and illegal'

  • Video shows man taunting bison at Yellowstone National Park

The bison was clearly not amused and charged at the man.

But the animal - which can weigh up to 2,000lb, twice as heavy as a horse - doesn't seem frightened by the man's teasing in the mobile phone clip.

Lindsey Jones shared the video to Facebook and at one point can be heard in the background saying, "Oh God, oh no, no, no, no".

But luckily for the man, after first charging towards him, the bison loses interest and turns away. "We need people to be stewards of Yellowstone, and one way to do that is to keep your distance from wildlife", Yellowstone superintendent Dan Wenk wrote in the post.

The bison then charges the man, missing him twice.

Wenk goes on to say that park regulations require visitors to stay at least 22 metres away from animals such as bison and elk and at least 91 metres away from bears and wolves. The video shows that the man was taunting a growling bison and was holding up traffic in Hayden Valley. As of Thursday afternoon, it had been viewed on Q2 more than 29,000 times. "We've seen it, and rangers are actively investigating the incident". "These distances safeguard both visitors and a remarkable experience of sharing landscape with thousands of freely roaming animals". Four people have been hospitalised by animals in the park this year so far, with the majority of incidents caused by humans getting too close to the animals.
