That omission gave room for the electoral commission, which ZESN and the opposition have accused of bias, to manipulate the results in favour of Mnangagwa and the ZANU-PF party, Biti said.

Police spokeswoman Charity Charamba told state broadcaster Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) that the three people killed in the clashes had yet to be identified.

Meanwhile opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa is still adamant that he won.

Zimbabwe's ruling party has won a majority of seats in Parliament, the electoral commission announced Wednesday, as the country braced for the first official results of the presidential election.

Zimbabwe's police say they have invoked a strict security act that forbids public gatherings after security forces swept into the capital to disperse hundreds of opposition protesters angry over Monday's election results.

Also speaking on VOA's Straight Talk Africa program, Den Moyo, chairman of the USA branch of the Movement for Democratic Change, said Wednesday's developments and the questionable results that sparked the clashes, have taken Zimbabwe backwards.

He has repeatedly accused ZANU-PF and election authorities of trying to use a flawed electoral register and fixed ballot papers to steal the election.

Millions of people voted peacefully on Monday in the first election since the army removed Robert Mugabe from power a year ago.

CIVIC society groups based in Matabeleland have blamed the two warring MDC-T factions, led by Nelson Chamisa (left) and Thokozani Khupe (right), for selling out their parliamentary seats to the ruling Zanu PF party by failing to resolve their differences ahead of Monday's general elections. Police said six people died when army troops opened fire on protesters the day before.

Zimbabwe's minister of justice, Ziyambi Ziyambi, has promised to restore "peace and tranquillity" in Harare but acrimony and distrust has only increased.

Mr Chamisa's spokesman, Nkululeko Sibanda, told journalists that the army's reaction was unjustified.

After first indicating it would release presidential vote totals on Wednesday, the electoral commission said it would wait until Thursday, adding that agents for the more than 20 candidates must verify them first. "We know that people will be beaten - especially in rural areas, like what they were doing before", said Harare shop worker Tracy Kubara, 26.

ZEC was expected to announce more results early this morning.

The 94-year-old former leader had been in power since independence from white minority rule in 1980 until he was forced to resign in November after the military and ruling party turned on him.

A presidential candidate needs more than 50% of the vote to win outright.

The African Union mission has said the elections "took place in a very peaceful environment" and "were highly competitive".

A credible and peaceful vote was meant to end Zimbabwe's global isolation and draw in foreign investment to revive the shattered economy. The EU mission questioned why presidential votes were counted first but were being announced last.
