Among the Superfund sites most at risk from Florence is Horton Iron and Metal, a former shipbreaking operation and fertilizer manufacturing site in a low-lying floodplain along the Cape Fear River outside Wilmington, North Carolina.

Storm surges, punishing winds and rain are turning some towns into rushing rivers - and the Category 1 hurricane is expected to crawl over parts of the Carolinas into the weekend, pounding some of the same areas over and over.

Florence had been a Category 3 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale with 120-mph winds as of Thursday, but dropped to a Category 1 hurricane before coming ashore.

By Friday evening, the centre of the storm had moved to eastern SC, about 15 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach, with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.

Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 kilometers) from its center. That's enough to fill the Chesapeake Bay or cover the entire state of Texas with almost 4 inches (10 centimeters) of water, he calculated. "It doesn't get any worse". The longer the hurricane winds continue, the longer water can be pushed inland, Graham said.

Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina said: "Our hearts go out to the families of those who died in this storm".

More than 760,000 customers in North Carolina were without power and 21,000 people were being housed in 157 shelters across the state. Nationwide, airlines canceled more than 2,400 flights through Sunday.

Potential losses: estimated $10 billion to $60 billion in economic damages.

As of Friday afternoon the storm had already claimed four lives, including a mother and her baby who were killed when a tree fell on their house in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Two deaths occurred in New Hanover County, one death occurred in Pender County, two died in Lenoir, two in Cumberland, and three in Duplin.

Emergency officials warned residents that the peril had probably not passed, as the storm continued to dump torrential rain. "We have started to see the water recede".

The authorities of the States of Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, and the nation's capital of Washington, in the direction which moves the "Florence", has introduced a state of emergency. That's still less than the 25 trillion gallons Hurricane Harvey dropped past year in Texas and Louisiana.

President Donald Trump praised the "incredible job" being done by the Federal Emergency Management Agency workers and first-responders.

Typhoon Mangkhut slammed into the northern coast of the Phillipines early Saturday, with witnesses saying the storm's ferocious winds and rain ripped the roofs off buildings and knocked out power.

New Bern resident Latasha Jones is one of the more fortunate ones. That count is expected to rise significantly.

The 640km-wide storm has struck regions as far north as NY state and left hundreds besieged by waters.

In New Bern, North Carolina, the storm surge "overwhelmed" the town, located at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent rivers, Cooper said.

Scientists can't say - yet - that climate change helped make Florence worse.

Another person died in a shelter at West Brunswick High School Thursday morning, however, their death was not related to the hurricane. Now now not lower than 68 people died as a scream result of Storm Harvey, in step with the Nationwide Storm Center.
