  • Kamala Harris pushes deceptively edited video to smear Brett Kavanaugh. But here’s the truth

The activists have stated they intend to return the funds to donors if Senator Collins votes against Mr Kavanaugh. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

Collins agrees that the crowdfunding campaign is attempting to bribe her.

And in Maine, two groups opposed to Kavanaugh's confirmation (the Maine People's Alliance and Mainers for Accountable Leadership) have teamed up with Ady Barkan to warn Collins that if she votes for Kavanaugh, they will crowdfund her Democratic opponent (whoever that might turn out to be) when she seeks reelection in 2020.

As of writing this, the campaign has raised about $1.2 million from people who don't want to see Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court.

Collins told The Wall Street Journal, "I have had three attorneys tell me that they think it is a clear violation of the federal law on bribery".

"Senator Collins will make up her mind based on the merits of the nomination. Extortion will not work on Senator Collins", Annie Clark says. While other Democratic senators have been vocal in their opposition to Kavanaugh, Heitkamp met with him for about 75 minutes in August and issued an official statement saying she was weighing the decision carefully. Kavanaugh had indicated he was not substantially involved in the nomination.

In Maine, a trio of advocacy groups continued their fundraising efforts Wednesday with a running tally of pledges coming to about $1.1 million.

"It seems kind of icky but it doesn't rise to the level of bribery because there's no agreement, " Jordan Libowitz, a spokesman for the Citizens for Ethics and Responsibilities.

But the debate has been over for a while when it comes to the money spent on politics: According to the Supreme Court, it's free speech.

Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein later motioned to subpoena for additional records from Kavanaugh's time as Staff Secretary in the Bush White House, calling Grassley's lack of support in requesting Kavanaugh's full record from the Archives a "devastating blow against transparency".

"You have the chance to stand up for the people of ME - and for the entire country - by rejecting this Supreme Court nominee", the fundraising site reads. "We will get you out of office".

All eyes are on Collins, as well as her fellow moderate Republican, Sen.

The 28 new "committee confidential" documents are from Kavanaugh's time in the White House counsel's office during the George W. Bush administration and show his involvement in judicial nominations, including for some of the more controversial judges of the era. After a meeting with him in August that she described as "excellent, " she said that he told her he agreed that Roe v. Wade was settled as a precedent of the court. King said Kavanaugh's record "indicates that he will" vote to overturn it or that he at least could "whittle away its protections".
