Djokovic crushes Del Potro in one-sided final

  • No doubts anymore Novak Djokovic has returned to tennis elite

The Argentine competed in his first Grand Slam final in nine years after the last time he reached a summit clash was back in 2009 when he had defeated Federer to win the title at the Flushing Meadows.

'We sat down and we just looked at the world from that perspective, breathed in the new inspiration, new motivation, ' he said. He inspired me to start playing tennis. It was all positives.

"I changed the racket, had to adjust certain things to the newly-occurring situation and that's why I feel like I'm a new player and the highest level that I've played on in the last two or three years".

Seiko's partner since 2014, Novak Djokovic wore his very own limited edition Astron GPS Solar watch on his wrist as he raised the trophy in the air.

Novak Djokovic's U.S. Open title moved him up three spots to No. 3 in the ATP rankings Monday, behind Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, making that trio the top three for the first time in 3½ years.

"Pete Sampras is one of the biggest legends ever to play the game", explained Djokovic. He was my idol'.

After taking just two points off Del Potro's first three service games, Djokovic, in his eighth final in NY and 23rd at the majors, pounced to break for 5-3.

"I have utmost respect for what they have achieved on the court, but also the champions, role models, they are off the court". He played a great match, very smart game.

"I was playing nearly at the limit all the time, looking for winners with my forehands, backhands, and I couldn't make it because Novak were there every time".

Djokovic then got right back to work, and announced that he was, once more, himself by winning Wimbledon.

"I was so close to desired level, and then I just completely underplayed that match".

Djokovic appears to be back to his best tennis having fought through a hard spell post-elbow surgery that saw him suffer three consecutive defeats for the first time in over a decade.

The second set immediately saw the Argentine under pressure on his serve, and though he managed to fend off Djokovic in game one, the relentless pressure told in game three as Del Potro sprayed two forehand errors to lose serve again. He was drained from 3 hours, 16 minutes trying to find weaknesses in perhaps the best defender in tennis, especially after losing the 22-point, 20-plus minute game in the second set that was the match's pivotal moment.

"I never gave up when I had the wrist problems", he said.

Potro had three more chances in the eighth, all saved by Djokovic in a marathon 20- minute game.

"I'm glad that Novak is the champion".

He said "Of course, it is a big challenge to take these kinds of tournaments to them. It will be in the heart for the rest of the life".
