Elon Musk Reveals First Person Set To Go To Moon With SpaceX

  • News SpaceX to give BFR update and announce a private Moon mission on Monday

It became the first private company to launch a spacecraft into orbit and safely return it to Earth in 2010, and the first commercial enterprise to fly to the space station in 2012 on a supply mission.

The announcement at SpaceX's headquarters in Hawthorne, Calif., followed days of speculation over the identity of the first passenger - and months of chatter about the capabilities of the BFR, an acronym for "Big Falcon Rocket" in its G-rated interpretation. The company will livestream the big reveal at 9 p.m. EDT. And with a digital subscription, you'll never miss a local story. Musk had previously hinted on Twitter that the passenger would be a resident of Japan.

That mission, the Apollo 17, included a crew made up of Commander Eugene Cernan, Command Module Pilot Ronald Evans, and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt.

Astronauts last visited the moon during NASA's Apollo program.

Elon Musk has revealed that his space exploration company SpaceX will be sending 42-year-old billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, the founder of Japan's largest online clothing retailer Zozotown, on a trip around the moon.

Whomever the -probably wealthy-passenger is, they likely won't be flying on the BFR alone.

The week-long Moon mission is scheduled for 2023, with tests kicking off within the "two to three years", the newspaper reports.

In moves typical of his publicity-seeking style, Musk, who is also the billionaire chief executive of electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc, had previously teased a few tantalising details about the trip and the passenger's identity, but left major questions unanswered.

The BFS is said to be able to hold 100 passengers.

Earlier this year, on February 6, the Falcon Heavy rocket successfully launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, launching a red Tesla Roadster driven by a Starman mannequin.

SpaceX is now prototyping the spaceship and other BFR hardware inside a 20,000-square-foot tent at the Port of Los Angeles - at least until a much bigger permanent facility is completed.

SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell gave a more generous time frame for BFR's debut during a TED Talk in April, saying it would launch "within a decade". The vehicle is now under development at the Los Angeles Port.
