  • Hurricane Florence Is Traveling A Similar Path As A 1933 Storm That Got Very, Very Close To D.C.

"On the forecast track, the center of Florence will move over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas Tuesday and Wednesday, and approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday", the National Hurricane Center said.

There was very little calm before the storm in Havelock Monday, as residents, emergency personnel and governmental leaders prepared for what could be the strongest hurricane the area has experienced in more than six decades.

Forecasters said Florence could become an extremely unsafe major hurricane sometime Monday and remain that way for days.

The National Hurricane Center issued an advisory Monday that the storm is expected to approach the North or SC coast Thursday as an "extremely unsafe major hurricane".

She said the city had received numerous phone calls about shelters opening, but she said those were a function of Craven County government, which had already declared a state of emergency.

South Carolina's governor has ordered more than a million people living along the state's coast to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Florence.

"McMaster said he would reverse lanes on four main roads to facilitate the evacuation", The State reported. Virginia's governor ordered a mandatory evacuation for some residents of low-lying coastal areas, while some coastal counties in North Carolina have done the same.

Dare County has a year-round population of more than 30,000, but the population balloons during tourist seasons.

Florence is now one of three hurricanes spinning in the Atlantic Ocean, along with Helene and Isaac.

"Traffic was backed up for about 9 miles (14 km) in places", said Paul Jones, a retiree who owns a home on the island. The center of the massive storm is then forecast to meander Thursday, Friday and Saturday over a stretch of coastline saturated by rising seas.

Hurricane Florence is expected to make landfall on Thursday but swells are already affecting the US East Coat. "Some computer models keep the storm just offshore though, which would lessen the local impact".

- Florence, the most powerful storm to menace the USA mainland this year, intensified into a Category 4 hurricane as it howled closer to the Carolinas on Monday, prompting evacuations of more than 1 million people to higher ground. An estimated 250,000 more people from the northern Outer Banks were due to be sent to higher ground starting Tuesday at midday.

The element will lead to a "life-threatening storm surges, exceptionally strong heavy rains and destructive winds", they say. "North Carolina is taking Hurricane Florence seriously, and you should, too", Cooper said, urging residents to prepare for lengthy power outages after the hurricane comes. As of Monday evening, only United hadn't announced waiver policies for Florence. Some schools will be used as evacuation shelters, which will open as needed, officials said Monday.

American said its integrated operations center in Fort Worth continues to closely monitor the track of these storms and so far, the airline has not cancelled any flights.
