Grassley's Office: Christine Blasey Ford’s Demands in Exchange for Testimony are Non-Starters

  • Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and President Donald Trump share a handshake before the sexual assault allegation came

At a Las Vegas rally Thursday night, Trump continued to maintain a neutral stance on Ford's claims, telling a crowd of supporters 'We gotta let it play out'.

Christine Blasey Ford, a California psychology professor, has accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were both in high school in the 1980s.

The committee must approve the nomination of Judge Kavanaugh before it passes to the full Senate for a vote.

Ford's lawyers repeated their call for the matter to be dealt with in a rigorous investigation, not what Democrats describe as a rushed hearing in the Republican-dominated Senate aimed at confirming Kavanaugh as quickly as possible.

Committee staff has been in negotiations with Ford's attorney, Democrat operative Debra Katz, for days about receiving testimony.

Trump said the judge had "tremendous support", much like his first Supreme Court pick, Justice Neil Gorsuch. She has said she believes Ford.

"I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!" he added.

Grassley has said that in the interest of making Ford comfortable, he'd be willing to let Ford testify in public or private.

According to Chairman Chuck Grassley's staff, these demands are non-starters. She said Ford needs time to make sure her family is secure, prepare her testimony and travel to Washington.

On Friday, it remained unclear how the hearing would proceed on Kavanaugh.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell expressed confidence on Thursday that Kavanaugh will ultimately be confirmed.

In light of the recent allegations made against Kavanaugh and what you previously knew of him, do you think he should sit on the Supreme Court?

US Capitol Police said 56 protesters were arrested in Senate office buildings during demonstrations against Kavanaugh on Thursday.

The Hawaii senator told CNN's "New Day" on Wednesday that she asks these questions of every nominee who comes before the committees she sits on.

According to reports on Thursday, the Republicans are considering hiring a female outside litigator to handle the questioning, which would be televised nationally. Susan Collins, a key Republican swing vote.

"For generations, women have been reluctant or afraid to speak out about their experiences because so often, they have been dismissed, accused of lying, or even attacked", he said. The FBI has said it is not investigating, a decision backed by Republicans who have accused Democrats of trying to delay the confirmation process. They want Kavanaugh to testify first to defend himself from allegations that haven't been specified first. Kavanaugh has called Ford's allegation "completely false".

"It is not the FBI's role to investigate a matter such as this", wrote Grassley, who also sent a letter to committee Democrats formally rejecting their bid for the FBI to investigate.

Negotiations continue over whether Ford will testify next week.

Ford's lawyers said on Tuesday she would testify before the committee only if the FBI first investigated her allegation.

Gillibrand said Senate Republicans' ultimatum of a Monday hearing was "bullying". Kavanaugh's confirmation to the lifetime position would be the second of the Trump administration and solidify conservative control of the nation's top court.

Ford requested additional safety measures.

"I have not communicated at all with [White House counsel] Don McGahn or anyone at the White House, or Judge Kavanaugh, about the topic of the Twitter thread", Whelan said when reached by phone.
